Speeches & Keynotes | by Danny Meadows-Klue | Keynote at the fifth anniversary of MSN’s portal in Mexico

Gracias

English translation

Five years is a long time in this new digital era, so any brand that has risen to the many many challenges of this market deserves an extra credit. We joke that years in the internet are like the years of a dog! Those of you in the industry will know what I mean. One of our years is seven years for a normal business - which makes me one of the youngest ninety-year-olds you will meet!

Around the world media is undergoing the most rapid change since the invention of television. This change is a revolution within our lifetime and one we are only still beginning to understand.

Yes, this is a young medium indeed. The world wide web is just over ten years old and many of its leading brands less than half that. Looking back, it may be strange to remember that it was invented by a British scientist fed-up with the failure of his research library to find the information he needed. It was an accident. A small office tool. Something never intended to become what we see today.

But Tim Berners Lee’s frustration created something that changed the world; the way we access knowledge, the way we communicate, the way we create; with time, even the way we think. From young to old, from business to family, from London to Mexico, from entertainment to marketing. The internet and the web connect people together in ways never possible before, and this change in the communication landscape ultimately changes ever part of society.

But what is next for the Mexican people? In this strange uncertain world can we say anything about the future? For once we can.

The United States and Europe provide a window into Mexico a few years from now. We can look at them and learn; learning from their mistakes as well as their successes, but most importantly learning from the way media and communication will change.

In my country we already spend more time online than with any other media channel, except television – and even that will change soon. In Mexico the price of access has fallen fast. Yes, audiences are rising too, but this is nothing compared to what will come. One day internet audiences will even top those of the biggest match between America and Chivas! It really is a revolution. And once the changes begin, they happen very fast; faster than you expect, faster than most firms even realise.

In marketing, there is a concept called ‘the tipping point’. The moment when an idea explodes from a small group of early adopters, into the mass market. From my friends in Mexico I hear that you are at that point, explosive change is beginning.

What happens next cannot be controlled, but only steered. Some companies will seize the opportunities of reaching these audiences, others will let them slip through their fingers. There will be major winners, but alas some major losers. Online marketing becomes a critical business tool, and one that is as much for the small company as the giant global brands.

So with that in mind I present a copy of my favourite book ‘The Tipping Point’ to the team at MSN, and wish them the best of success for helping the Mexico, and Mexican business to discover the power of online.
