500 publishers sign up to paid content platform


US firm Journalism Online has claimed that more than 500 newspapers and magazines have agreed to join its new content payment network. The platform, set to go live in the Autumn in the US, lets publishers sign up as ‘affiliates’ to the network, using a universal Journalism Online account.Readers then pay to subscribe to the platform, which gives them access to their choice of publishers on the platform. Affiliates can select their own approach to offering paid access, based on their respective brands, content and online readership. The company said the payment models would yield between $50 to $100 per year per subscriber for the publisher.

A website with one million monthly online visitors, for example, could expect to earn new revenues of $5m to $10m, the company said. The site was launched in April 2009 by three veteran US media executives, and has already attracted publishers representing 176 dailies, 330 non-dailies and "leading global news sites" have signed letters of intent to become its affiliates.

"The websites of these publishers have more than 90 million monthly visitors from around the world," the New York-based company said in a statement.

Journalism Online is not releasing the names of the affiliates at some publications want to have separate releases. The publishers that have signed up to the service are not exclusively in the US, instead coming from throughout the Americas and Europe, the company said.

The move comes several days after News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch outlined plans to begin charging readers of newspapers owned by his media empire.
