Napster takes on Spotify with £5 streaming and download service

08/10/2009

Napster has launched a new subscription service that gives users 5 downloads of their choice and letting them stream the music stores catalogue of eight million songs via PCs and preview tracks on ‘just about any web-enabled mobile phone’. The five downloaded MP3s have no restrictions or time limits, and subscribers can keep tracks forever and transfer to their chosen device. Tracks are compatible with all MP3 players and music-enabled mobile handsets, including iPod and iPhone devices. At the same time, subscribers can explore and discover new artists via unlimited ad-free streaming from Napster’s music catalogue of more than eight million tracks.

They can also browse, search, preview and download tracks directly from their mobile phone.

Thorsten Schliesche, Napster's Vice President Sales and Marketing Europe, said: “We listened to our customers and developed a service that provides music lovers with a flexible, best-value service that allows them to tailor their digital music experience to their personal requirements.

“Whether users want to build on their own collection of tracks, discover new music or simply stream their favourite songs into their own space – Napster has worked hard to provide an environment where music lovers can create their own easy-to-use experience, all available under one fixed and best-value cost.”

Marking the launch of this new offer, and as part of Napster’s ongoing integration with parent company Best Buy Inc, Napster will also launch the service on October 8th in Carphone Warehouse’s 817 stores nationwide, giving all Carphone Warehouse customers a free one-month trial card of the Napster Unlimited service, including 5 MP3s to keep.

Napster also announced last Friday that leading computer manufacturer Dell will soon ship select desktop and laptop PCs in the U.S., U.K. and Germany pre-loaded with a free one year Napster trial that includes 60 MP3s.
