4oD app coming to iPhone as C4 takes on iPlayer

Channel 4 is launching an iPhone version of its 4OD application, as the broadcaster ramps up its online and mobile services. The app, which has been available on the iPad since April, will be released for the iPhone and iPod touch in September to mark the launch of a revamped 4OD service. Users will have 30-day access to Channel 4 broadcasts, as well as archived episodes from shows such as The Inbetweeners and The IT Crowd.

Apps for the BBC iPlayer and ITV Player are already available for iOS. Although there is a Demand 5 application from Channel 5, this is solely dedicated to Big Brother.

Meanwhile, 4oD on Channel4.com has been rebuilt to include a host of new features, including predictive search and viewer driven recommendations.

The new 4oD will also include 'My 4oD', where registered users can create playlists of episodes, keep track of episodes they've watched or started watching and get in-page reminders from Channel 4 whenever a new 4oD episode is available for them to watch.

Sarah Milton, Channel 4's Head of VoD said—'Increasing the availability of 4oD on multiple platforms remains a key tenet of Channel 4's strategy. Channel4.com is by far the most popular access point for 4oD and we are focused on developing and improving this proposition. We have refined and optimised the design to ensure viewers get the best experience from the wealth of content Channel 4 has to offer. We have over 5,000 hours of archive programming available on the Channel4.com 4oD service, and the redesign makes it even easier for users to browse our offering."

The new 4oD on Channel4.com will launch on Wednesday 31 August.
