Nokia has launched a free wi-fi service across central London this week, to promote its new Windows 7 smartphone, the Lumia 800. Mobile internet users in London will benefit from an additional 26 free WiFi locations across the capital as part of the promotional drive. From now until the end of December people will be able to log onto the network and receive unlimited internet access without the need to register or enter a password.

Download speeds however will be restricted to 1MB/S per user for downloads and 500KB/s for uploads.

WiFi provider Spectrum Interactive is teaming up with Nokia for the initiative, which will take in popular central London locations such as Oxford Street, South Kensington and Mayfair – as a precursor to bringing free WiFi to the entire city.

Simon Alberga, Spectrum’s chief exec, said: “We see Wi-Fi evolving into a free service in areas such as restaurants and it is because people are coming in for a relatively short period of time.

In these cases, Wi-Fi is provided as a free service and it is being funded by a partner, sponsor or an advertising business model."
