ZTE uses eBay again to sell latest £70 Firefox smartphone

ZTE is selling its £69.99 Firefox OS smartphone, the Open C, exclusively through eBay ahead of its general release next month.

The phone has been simultaneously launched on eBay in the UK, US, Germany, Russia and many other countries. It costs £69.99 SIM-free in the UK and is currently being listed with free delivery as a "buy it now" item.

The handset features a 4-inch 800 x 480 screen, 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable by up to a further 32GB through microSD).

The 3G mobile has a rear 3-megapixel camera and features the latest version of Mozilla's Firefox operating system. A 1,400mAh battery provides power.

“We are excited to work together with Mozilla and eBay to offer the ZTE Open C to consumers globally, following our successful collaboration last year,” said Adam Zeng, CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices. “ZTE will continue to make a comprehensive range of innovative devices available to appeal to consumers who demand great user experience and performance, at different price points.”

In August 2013, ZTE and eBay collaborated to launch the ZTE Open, the world’s first smartphone powered by Firefox OS, directly to first time smartphone customers in markets around the world. The ZTE Open sold out only three days after launching.

Existing users of the ZTE Open in the US, UK and Germany will be entitled to free technical support for any issues with software refreshes on their new ZTE Open C devices. Optional service plans that provide buyers of ZTE Open C with professional technical support and additional product protection are available in these three markets.

Mozilla has provided information about the latest version of the Firefox OS on its website.

“We are pleased that ZTE is delivering another Firefox OS device, building on the success of the ZTE Open,” said Dr. Li Gong, Mozilla Chief Operating Officer. “The ZTE Open C is an amazing experience for first time smartphone buyers.”

“We’re excited that ZTE has again decided on debut its OPEN C on eBay,” said John Lin, CEO of eBay Greater China, “eBay, with its 145 million active buyers around the world, is uniquely positioned to help Chinese brands such as ZTE to reach global consumers directly and expand worldwide.”
