Initially launching in New York, the tool will now also give users inforamtion about now Lyft and Gett, displaying quotes for them to compare.

Until now, Uber has consistently blocked start-ups that offered a similar service.

Last June, a start-up called Urbanhail was begun by a Harvard graduate, who called it “Kayak, but for rides.”

The service made use of Uber’s API within the app. Uber permits such a practice, but only if does not violate the company’s terms of use.

Google has partnered with other ride-hailing services through Maps before — Ola in India and 99Taxis in Brazil, among others — this is the first time it's adding direct competitors to Uber in the US.

Meanwhile, Google has teamed up with Uber to launch a new promotion for Android Pay customers in the US.

All users of the mobile payment platform will be entitled to a 50 percent discount on the next ten journeys they make using the service between now and October 15.
