Facebook tests 'Want' button with retailers

Facebook is testing its long-rumoured 'Want’ button, a retail-friendly accompaniment to the ‘Like’ button that could help the social network boost revenue through sales commissions and ads.Facebook is working with seven retail partners in the beta test; Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Victoria's Secret, Michael Kors, Neiman Marcus, Smith Optics, and Facebook users in certain territories have been able to click “want” and “collect” buttons upon products from the retailers.

Google debuts tag manager for analytics and ads

Google has launched a new tool that will help firms manage website tags- snippets of code used to track traffic, insert ads and link to affiliates. Google Tag Manager is a free service, and one that operates in a similar manner as other Google web site services, such as Google Analytics or Google Adwords. The system is designed to cut down on admin time taken inserting tags for analytics, ad networks or affiliates.

Sky partners with Affiliate Window for Now TV

NOW TV, the internet TV service powered by Sky launched this summer, has chosen Affiliate Window to handle its affiliate marketing campaign. Sky has partnered with Affiliate Window since early 2008. Mobile traffic ‘converting at rate of 3.1%’- study

Mobile is accounting for 7.85% of all online sales in the UK, according to new research. The study, from Affiliate Window’s second annual m-commerce white paper, looks at mobile growth trends. On average across all mobile platforms, mobile raffic is converting at 3.1%, and 10.94% of traffic is now mobile (including tablets).

Cyberlockers under threat: Filesonic axes file-sharing tools after Megaupload arrests

Christmas ecommerce report: Paid search gets 50% more transactions

Fifth of retailers paying out over £100k month in affiliate commissions

Just under a fifth (19%) of all merchants are paying out over £100,000 a month to affiliate marketers referring customers to their sites, according to a new report. The IAB’s affiliate marketing council have released research into advertiser’s opinions of the affiliate marketing sector. The survey answered by 140 brands delves into areas such as, how much the discipline is valued and used, the size and growth of the channel as well as how easy it is to integrate into the wider online marketing mix.

EU privacy law: Just 1 in 10 think marketers can engage consumers without cookies

With the controversial EU online privacy law coming into full effect next year, marketers lack confidence in their ability to engage users online without tracking their behaviour via cookies.Under the new EU directive, visitors will have to agree upfront to a website uploading cookies to their device - rather than the consent being hidden in terms and conditions as it has previously. According to research conducted by affilinet at ad:tech 2011 show, only one in ten (12%) of those surveyed at ad:tech 2011 believe that businesses will be able to engage consumers as successfully without the use of cookies.

TradeDoubler debuts first ‘affiliate app community’ with Tesco

Performance marketing company TradeDoubler has launched its Affiliate Revenue Share Community (ARC), with Tesco the first firm to sign up to the scheme. The new scheme will provide Tesco affiliates with a suite of engaging and interactive tools and widgets with which to drive incremental sales.

TradeDoubler’s ARC platform allows developers to produce widgets, interactive creatives and other tools using Merchants’ APIs and product feeds. These tools are made available to affiliates on the merchants’ programme enabling them to drive sales more effectively with higher conversion rates and better customer engagement.

James Murdoch: Digital newspapers ‘will act more like cable channels’ for ads

Newspapers will increasingly to act more like cable channels as they move to the web and mobile apps, creating a wholesale marketplace for advertising, according to James Murdoch, James Murdoch, News Corp.’s chairman for Europe and Asia.

“Digital news will look like cable channels with affiliated revenue,” Murdoch said at a media conference in Monaco last week. He added that titles will compete for ad revenue across this market and media buyers will “make a big commitment” to purchase advertising, rather than making bookings for just a month at a time.

UK affiliate marketing sector to drive £4.62bn in online retail sales during 2010

The affiliate marketing sector will drive an estimated £4.62bn in UK online retail sales during 2010, according to a report published this week by Econsultancy. The Affiliate Marketing Buyer’s Guide 2010, the most comprehensive report available on the UK’s digital performance marketing industry, estimates that the sector grew by 8% in 2009 and will expand by a further 12% in 2010.

According to the report, the sector was worth £4.13 billion last year, when an estimated £245 million was paid in commissions and fees to affiliates and networks. In line with the sector’s overall growth, the value of commission and fees will increase to £275 million for 2010, according to the report.

Twitter turns to affiliate marketing: offers daily deals via ‘Earlybird’ launch

Twitter has launched an advertising feature for morning people, dubbed Earlybird, letting advertisers offer users exclusive deals on products and events. In a blog post, the company officially announced EarlyBird, which aims to inform users of special promotions that are unique to Twitter and the account. Advertisers who pay Twitter to distribute the offers via @Earlybird will determine the availability and pricing.

The offers will be time sensitive, so fast action will be needed from users to grab a bargain before they’re gone. Bargain hunters can also spread the word by retweeting deals. None of the selected advertisers have yet been named, but Twitter offers more details here. Despite getting a $160m boost in venture capital funding earlier this year, and being worth an estimated $1bn, Twitter is still on the hunt for sustainable revenue sources to support the company.
