Global internet population by region: 2014

This chart shows internet penetration by region. North America and Western Europe have the highest internet penetration out of any region analysed with 81% and 78% of the populations being online. Both North America and Western Europe have double the amount of penetration of the world average (35%). The region that has the lowest internet penetration is South Asia which has only 12% of its population on the internet.

Top web brands by unique web audience: US

This chart shows the top online brands in the US by unique monthly visitors and average time spent for the month. Google received the highest amount of unique visitors for the month, but users spent a relatively low average amount of time on the site at 21 hour and 51 minutes. Facebook had the second highest amount of unique monthly visitors, but the average time spent on the site reached 6 hours and 14 minutes for the month.

Facebook hits 1bn users- top regional audiences revealed

Facebook has surpassed 1 billion users for the first time, as the newly-listed social networking giant looks to expand its global reach and ad revenues. The passing of the milestone was announced by founder Mark Zuckerberg on US television on Thursday. The company said that those billion users were to date responsible for 1.13 trillion "likes", 219 billion photos and 17 billion location check-ins.

App stores are gaining ground in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, South and Central America and Africa as smartphone penetration increases and users seek a richer experience on their mobile devices, according to a new report. African broadband users ‘to exceed 250 million by 2015’

The number of broadband connections over cellular networks in Africa will exceed 250 million by the end of 2015, according to a new report. The study, from Informa Telecoms & Media, found that the number of broadband connections over cellular networks in Africa will exceed 250 million by the end of 2015. The report, entitled "Broadband in Africa," forecasts that a fifth of Internet traffic in Africa will be carried by cellular networks by 2015, compared with a global equivalent of just 3 percent.

Third of world will be online by end of year- UN report

The number of web users will surpass two billion this year, approaching a third of the world population, but developing countries need to step up access to the vital tool for economic growth, according to a report from a United Nations agency. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said that users have doubled in the past five years.

Of 226 million new Internet users this year, 162 million will be from developing countries where growth rates are now higher, the ITU said in a report. The estimated global population is currently 6.9 billion. However, by the end of 2010, 71 percent of the population in developed countries will be online compared with 21 percent of people in developing countries.

Mobile phone market worth $200bn by 2012

Revenues from mobile phone sales are expected to grow at 6.8% between 2007 and 2013, and should exceed $200bn by the end of 2013, according to Informa Telecoms & Media in its latest Future Mobile Handsets report. Emerging markets, including Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) and Africa, will make up the majority global handset market value, with 60% share in 2013. Growth disparities between developed and emerging markets will become apparent within the next five years. Growth will not exceed 2% CAGR in developed markets according to the report, handset market value growth rates are slowing significantly in developed markets and, if the current economic slowdown persists, could even turn negative after 2009.
