Technology brands ‘spending less time on social media’

The number of technology brands using Twitter and Facebook fell during 2012, with engagement levels dropping leading brands continue to use social media, but only 10% actually engaging, according to new research. The study, from EML Wildfire, indicates that the UK’s fastest growing technology companies are continuing to miss out on the potential of social media by failing to engage with their audiences. Despite continued numbers of tech companies using social media channels, the number of brands that are actually building two-way conversations has fallen in the past twelve months.

Xbox reveals 37% engagement with ‘Nuads’ video format

Microsoft has unveiled the engagement results of its NUads interactive video poll format, indicating that more than a third of viewers engaged with the ads when prompted. Nuads rolled out earlier in the autumn of 2012 on Xbox LIVE in the US, Canada and the UK.

A new survey indicates that brand marketers need to reach shoppers before the store as consumers actively seek promotions when planning their weekly shops. Posting photos on Facebook greatly increases engagement for your posts, according to a new study looking into Facebook marketing for brands. The research, from inbound marketer HubSpot found that photos on Facebook Pages received 53% more Likes and attracted 104% more comments than text posts alone.

YouTube debuts ‘Shoppable Video Ads’ to drive Christmas sales

Google is testing a new shoppable video format on YouTube, letting viewers click on products and text displayed in video. YouTube's shoppable video ads will display a shaded rectangle in the middle of the screen whenever a product appears. When a user rolls over that embedded video link, the product name is displayed with a link to the purchase page.

UK companies missing trick with online customer service

UK consumers are being let down by substandard customer service on the web and email, and in many cases, service has got worst since 2011, according to a new study. The 2012 Eptica Multichannel Customer Experience Study found that websites could only answer just over half (53%) of customer questions, while company responses to email queries has worsened since 2011. Social media use had doubled, although many still failed to integrate social media into their overall customer service strategy.

Facebook marketing trends- Paid media 'gets 5 times more reach than free fan pages'

Among a selection of the 100 leading brand pages on Facebook, those using paid media reached 5.4 times more people on average than those using no paid media, according to a new study.
The report, ‘Understanding Paid & Earned Reach On Facebook,’ published by Facebook together with comScore, forms part of Facebook’s attempts to persuade sceptical brand marketers to migrate their efforts from free fan pages to paid for sponsored stories.

Plans for ‘.uk’ domain names announced as alternative to ‘.co.uk’

Nominet, the not-for-profit organisation responsible for running the .uk infrastructure, has launched a consultation on the introduction of a new service which, if approved, would herald a significant change for the .uk domain name space. The proposed new service is aimed at businesses and would potentially offer shorter domain names registered at the second level (i.e. www.yourbusiness.uk) as well as one of the most comprehensive package of security features available. It would sit alongside the existing .uk portfolio, including .co.uk which already has more than 10 million domains registered.
