Web giants unite to fight Government’s Internet copyright plans

Internet giants Google, Facebook, eBay UK and Yahoo have joined forces to fight one of the measures in the Government's proposed Digital Economy Bill. In a joint letter to business secretary Lord Mandelson, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook and eBay have expressed "grave concerns" about plans in the Digital Economy Bill to give ministers powers to amend copyright law without primary legislation.

Google reveals top UK search trends of 2009

Google has revealed the UK’s top search trends in 2009, with Swine Flu, the death of Jade Goody and the popularity of Susan Boyle topping the list.Google's annual "zeitgeist", which analyses the firm's search trends, revealedf that top website searches included Hotmail, eBay, Yahoo and social network Bebo. The fastest rising search queries of the year included the BBC's iPlayer and Bing.

"Britons had mixed feelings as they headed online this year to search for their favourite online tools, to learn about celebrities new and old, and to find a good bargain," said Google spokesperson Anthony House. "People searched about new sensations like Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle, but they also turned to the web to learn about the deaths of Stephen Gately, Jade Goody and Michael Jackson."

eBay Skype sale gets Greenlight

The consortium of private investors looking to buy Skype from eBay have agreed to settle litigation with the web phone firm’s founders. The settlement will see Skype’s founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, get a 14-percent stake in the Internet phone service in the transaction. eBay is selling Skype in order to focus on its core online auction and payments business.

Skype founders to sue eBay as sale hits snag

A company owned by the founders of Skype has filed a copyright suit against eBay and the investor group that has agreed to buy the internet telephony phone service.The company, Joltid, a Swedish firm owned by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, says Skype used its technology without authorisation. The move could potentially disrupt the $1.9 bn sale of the internet telephony firm, which was agreed last month.

eBay to sell 65% of Skype for $2bn

eBay is to sell the majority of its stake in internet telephony service Skype to an investment group for nearly $2bn. The deal will see Internet auction giant sell a majority stake in its online phone unit Skype for $1.9bn to private investors including Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm headed by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen. The deal valued Skype at $2.75bn but was well below the $3.1bn eBay spent in acquiring Skype, and shares in eBay fell more than 2% after the news.

Ebay to sell new cars via GM deal

The expansion in scope of the auction giant took another big step today with the announcement of a deal with General Motors that will see Ebay become a major retailer of new cars. The scale of the deal suggests a strategic move into primary retailing, alongside the second hand market the brand started out in. 20,000 cars from over 200 Californian dealers will be available from today, in a move that is clearly a pilot ahead of a wider repositioning.

Facebook becomes UK's most searched for brand

Searches to Facebook in the UK rocketed during the last quarter of 2008, putting the site in second place after Google.co.uk, writes Brand Republic. 1 in every 42 online searches included the term "Facebook" and the site received 52% more searches than YouTube. Overall, Facebook was included in 2.39% of all UK searches, followed by YouTube (1.57%), eBay (1.25%) and Bebo (0.96%). The BBC came in fifth with 0.86% and was the most searched for "offline" brand during the period.
Facebook launched a redesign of many of its features this month, including a new "Twitter-style" follow feature which allows users to track updates from celebrities and businesses. The firm is also set to increase the speed of updates and profile changes on the site.
