European email trends: Hotmail leads pack but Gmail catching fast

Hotmail remains the most used web-based email service across Europe, but Gmail, Yahoo and Mail.ru are catching fast, according to new research. The study, from comScore, looked at internet usage in Europe during June 2012, showing that 397.2 million Europeans went online for an average of 25.9 hours.

Google takes patent search tool to Europe

Google has rolled out its patent search across Europe, along with a number of new features to help budding inventors, entrepreneurs and brands check if their ideas have been copyrighted. The tool was initially launched in the US back in 2006, but the revamped service now includes ‘prior art search’. "Prior art" is a legal term for records of innovation that preceded a specific patent claim.

Mobile commerce trends- Europeans using smartphones for shopping

Mobile shopping is on the rise in Europe, with a growing number of smartphone users making transactions via their device, according to new research. The study, from comScore, looked at mobile commerce usage across the five leading European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom). The EU5 mobile retail audience nearly doubled over the past year, with 1 in 6 smartphone users accessing online retail sites and apps on their device. In addition, 1 in 8 EU5 smartphone users actually completed a retail transaction on their phones.

Online ad spend growth showed the most notable growth for Europe with 12.1%. Traditional print media suffered the largest decrease in the region with newspapers and magazines posting -3.6% and -4.4% decrease in spend.

Smartphone trends- Samsung extends lead over Apple in Europe

Samsung continues to lead European smartphone market, and the Galaxy manufacturer now has five of Britain’s top 10 best selling handsets. Samsung has increased its European market share to 45 per cent, while RIM has found its share in the UK fall to 10.9 per cent, compared to 21.6 per cent at the same point of last year, according to market data company Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

German ad spend 2012: Automotive sector fastest riser (infographic)

In the period from January to April 2012, advertising expenditures in the German advertising market totaled €9.4 billion, an increase of 1.6% or €143.6 million compared to the same period in the previous year, according to new data. Across all advertising media, the Internet showed the strongest growth proportionally in the German market. In absolute terms, the strongest driver of Internet advertising in the period from January to April 2012 was the automotive product group.

Global online recruitment trends: London firms ‘flocking to hire online freelancers’

London businesses are flocking to hire online freelancers, as the UK capital is coming out as the top earning city in Europe, where online hiring was up 25% over last quarter, according to a new report. The online employment report from Elance, an online employment platform, found an increased demand for creative skills such as web design and content writing, rising by more than 200% compared to a year ago, as companies are investing heavily in creative talent.

Online privacy concerns rise as customers shun untrusted brands (Infographic)

Nearly all (94%) of consumers worry about their online privacy, and are less likely to engage with companies they do not trust, according to new report. The research, from TRUSTe, also found that 54% of consumers are now more concerned about online privacy than one year ago. The study also found that 27% of consumers are more concerned with mobile privacy than website privacy.

Most UK businesses 'still ignoring EU cookie laws'

EU laws requiring websites to obtain 'informed consent' from users before employing cookies to store information from a computer or mobile device came into force at the end of May.

According to Gary David Smith, co-founder of Prism Total IT Support as many as 90% of UK website owners are currently ignoring the legislation.

Global ad spend 2012- Internet outpaces other media with 12% growth

Global internet ad spend growth has outpaced all other media by a large margin this year, while magazines have seen the only fall, according to new research. The findings, from Nielsen’s quarterly Global AdView Pulse report, indicate that TV continues to attract the majority of advertising dollars. However, Internet advertising saw the biggest increases, with advertisers spending 12.1 percent more in Q1 2012 than one year prior.

Google’s £169 tablet to launch in UK without music, film or magazines

Google's Nexus 7 tablet is due for launch in a couple of weeks, but the internet giant has admitted the iPad rival will go on sale in Europe without access to the Play Store’s music, magazines or TV shows after it failed to agree deals with the rights holders. Announced last month, the Nexus 7 features a smaller 7-inch screen than the iPad, and will cost just £169 for the base model. It goes on sale on July 19 in the US and Europe. However, the ability to access TV shows, music and magazines will remain exclusive to the US for the initial launch period.

Global Facebook audience growth over past 5 years- Latin America leads the way

Facebook’s reach amongst the total internet audience has continued to increase over the past five years across all regions, according to research from comScore. Globally, Facebook reached 12 percent of the internet audience in December 2007 and as of December 2011 the social network reached over half of the internet audience, 55 percent (43 percentage point rise).

Mobile adspend reaches $5.3bn in 2011- Asia Pacific leads the way

About $5.3 billion was spent on mobile advertising in 2011, according to the first industry-sponsored measure of the lucrative market. The survey by the Interactive Advertising Bureau with its IAB Europe affiliate and the research firm IHS found the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 35.9% of global revenues.

Watered-down EU cookie law comes into force with last minute changes

A controversial new series of online privacy rules have come into effect within the European Union's 27 member countries, requiring companies to receive consent to track individuals' actions online. In a surprise move, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has changed the wording of the laws, moving from needing 'explicit consent' to 'implied consent' from website users.
