Virgin Atlantic overtakes British Airways in travel website usability

As the possibility of industrial strike action looms over its customers this summer, Virgin Atlantic is faring better online, making significant improvements to its website and mobile app to replace its strike-hit competitor, British Airways, at the top of the travel website usability stakes, according to a new study.

The 2011 Flights Online Report from user experience consultancy, Webcredible revealed that with an overall score of 82 per cent, Virgin Atlantic has, for the first time wrestled the top spot from British Airways, which scored 80 per cent on its website usability this year.

Top 10 travel sites in Europe

Expedia, Priceline and Groupe SNCF were the most visited online travel properties in Europe according to new data from comScore. In April 2011, the number of European visitors to the Travel category grew 11 percent in the past year.

Travel properties, which include online travel agents, destination information sites, and transportation and accommodation sites, now penetrate 44.0 percent of the European internet audience, a 5percentage point increase.

Expedia to part company with Trip Advisor

Online travel giant Expedia has unveiled plans to spin off its TripAdvisor brand in a deal that could value the popular user reviews site at $4bn. Dara Khosrowshahi, Expedia chief executive, said Trip Advisor had grown to a point that it was now ready to be spun off into a pure-play media company. Expedia said it hopes to split into two public companies – Expedia and TripAdvisor – by the third quarter of 2011.
