107 million UK visits to retail sites on Christmas day

UK Internet users made 84 million visits to retail websites on Christmas Eve and 107 million visits on Christmas Day up an astonishing 86% and 71% respectively compared to the same days in December 2011, according to new data. The study, from Experian, found that on Christmas Eve 1 in every 125 searches conducted in the UK included the word 'sale' or 'sales'.

Search engine visits drop for first time this year

Visits to major search engines in the UK fell for the first time this year, with sports terms such as BBC Sport proving more popular than Olympic specific search keywords, according to new data. As shown in the table, visits to the major search engines have actually decreased by 100 million since July 2012. Similarly, visits are down by 40 million since August 2011, making this month the first of 2012 in which we haven’t seen a year-on-year increase in search activity.

Top 50 online retailers in the UK- Olympics boosts travel sites

Amazon remained top of the UK online shops during August, followed by Apple and Argos, while the Olympics boosted visits to travel sites, according to new research. The findings, from the IMRG-Experian Hitwise Hot Shops List, indicate that London 2012 Tickets was the fastest moving retailer this quarter as consumers flocked online for precious Olympics tickets. On the Beach entered the top 50 for the first time this quarter, joining 10 other travel brands who all rose in the rankings of the Hot Shops List with the exception of easyJet, which retained its previous position.

Top 30 US & UK Olympic Facebook posts- Jessica Ennis’ page grows 295%

Following an action packed Olympic weekend in which Team GB increased their medal haul, Experian looks at how Facebook is fuelling the UK’s excitement around the Games. Team GB's fan page has grown rapidly from less than 100,000 fans on the eve of the games to almost three quarters of a million fans (705,000) in little over a week. Meanwhile, the longer established US Olympic Team page has grown only two per cent from 2.2 million since the games began.

Branding clampdown hands non-sponsors Olympic-sized marketing boost

LOCOG’s attempts to protect sponsors could be diverting attention to their fiercest rivals, data from global information services company Experian shows. UK traffic to the websites of Pepsi and Nike had been declining in volume in the lead up to the games, while those of London 2012 Partners Adidas and Coca-Cola saw substantial rises. However, the trend reversed this weekend following widespread reporting that the brand clampdown could mean that visitors to the games who displayed the logos of non-sponsor firms could be barred from entry.

UK search wars: Bing and Yahoo lose further ground to Google

Google has increased its dominant position in the UK search market, accounting for more than 9 in 10 of all searches, according to the latest data. The research, from ComScore, indicates that UK Internet users made 2.2 billion visits to search engines in April 2012, up by 89 million visits compared to April 2011. The increase in search activity represents a 4.1 per cent year-on-year increase.

Instagram enters top 10 social networks in UK

Last month, Facebook announced the $1 billion acquisition of photo sharing app Instagram. This is a landmark deal for the acquisition of an app but Instagram became the 10th most visited social network in the UK in March 2012, showing the increasing appetite for photo sharing online. According to research from Experian Hitwise, Instagram received almost 13 million UK Internet visits in March 2012, a massive increase from the 300,000 visits it received in March 2011.
