Nokia debuts first Windows 7 smartphone 'Lumia'

Nokia has launched the Lumia, its first Windows 7 smartphone since its partnership with Microsoft earlier this year, as the worlds largest phone manufacturer looks to topple Apple and Google in the smartphone market. The Lumia 800 will go on sale in the UK within weeks, and Nokia began accepting preorders this week. Stephen Elop, Nokia chief executive said the new handset is the "first real Windows phone". It has a 3.7-inch screen, eight megapixel camera and runs Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software.

Nokia wins Apple iPhone patent case

Nokia has won a landmark case against Apple for using technologies patented by the Finnish phone giant in its iPhone. The victory is the result of Apple settling a patent dispute, which began in October 2009 and led to more than 40 claims and counter-actions. Nokia sued Apple in the United States, arguing the iPhone-maker was getting a "free ride" on technologies patented by Nokia. The terms of the deal have remain confidential but Nokia has said its second-quarter earnings will be boosted by the agreement to settle all litigation.

Virtual worlds back in vogue? Habbo Hotel owner makes record profits

Finnish group Sulake, owner of the Habbo Hotel virtual world, said it made a record net profit of €1.6m in 2010, on revenue up 20% at €56.2m, driven by sales of virtual goods and games. The Helsinki-headquartered company said 2010's numbers represented the best annual financial results in its history, and that its profit for the fiscal year came out to €1.6 million ($2.3 million) -- Sulake has not disclosed profits for 2009, but the firm said its profitably increased this year.

Nokia teams up with Microsoft for Windows 7 smartphones

Nokia has struck a partnership with Microsoft to make Windows Phone 7 its primary smartphone operating system, as the phone maker aims to regain lost market share from Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platform.

The deal will see Nokia adopt Windows Phone as its “principle smartphone strategy” while contributing its expertise on hardware design and language support so that it can bring the software platform to “a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.” Nokia added it will innovate “on top of the platform” in areas like imaging.

Nokia CEO issues ‘brutal’ memo and ditches first MeeGo smartphone

Nokia has reportedly stopped development of its first MeeGo smartphone, as CEO Stephen Elop issued an internal memo offering a brutally honest assessment of the firm’s prospects. The news comes as the phone making giant struggles to regain market share lost to Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platform.

The leaked memo has stoked ongoing speculation that the company is about to expand from Symbian and MeeGo to include Android or Windows Phone 7 handsets to boost sales. In the memo, Elop’s describes Nokia as a company in crisis, and says that the firm has even failed to yet provide a product that matches the first iPhone. “The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience," Elop wrote in the note which was distributed to the Finnish company's staff.

Spotify debuts TV service in Nordics

Spotify has launched its music service on TVs across Sweden and Finland this week, in partnership with Nordic telecommunications giant TeliaSonera. Spotify is making the music app available to TeliaSonera’s 120,000 digital TV customers.

The TV app will be available to TeliaSonera customers who have subscribed to the Spotify Premium service, giving them access to a streamlined version of the music application that can be used to access Spotify playlists on the TV screen via the TeliaSonera remote control. Last year Spotify launched its mobile app on the iPhone, Android and Symbian smartphone platforms.
