Global mobile trends 2012: Smartphone sales up 47% as feature phones dip 3%

The study, from research firm Gartner, looked at the smartphone operating system market during the third quarter of 2011. Android has more than doubled its market share from the same period last year, the study found.

Global social media revenue 'to reach $10.3bn this year'

Worldwide social media revenue is to reach $10.3bn in 2011, up 41% on last year, with ads and games as the key drivers for growth, according to a new report. The study, from Gartner, predicts that worldwide social media revenue is forecast for consistent growth with 2012 revenue totaling $14.9 billion, and the market is projected to reach $29.1 billion in 2015. Advertising revenue is, and will remain, the largest contributor to overall social media revenue. Social media advertising revenue is forecast to total $5.5 billion in 2011, and grow to $8.2 billion in 2012.

Android and Windows 7 to overtake Blackberry and iPhone by 2012- Gartner

Nearly half of the world's smartphones will be using Google's Android operating system by the end of 2012, according to the research firm Gartner. Google will lead the race with Apple, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) and Microsoft by the end of this year and take 49.2% of the market in 2012, according to the research firm’s forecast.

The report also went on to predict that Nokia's tie-up with Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system would also be a success, with a 19.5% share of the smartphone market by 2015 – leapfrogging its rivals to the number two spot. Worldwide smartphone sales are expected to reach 468m units in 2011 – a 57.7% increase on 2010.

Global mobile phone sales up 12% in Q2 2008

Worldwide mobile phone sales grew 11.8% during Q2 to reach 305m units according to new figures from Gartner. Sales of mobile phones in Western Europe reached close to 42m units during the quarter, up 16% from the previous quarter. However, quarterly year-on-year sales were down 8.2% as the region reached total mobile penetration rates of 121.5% for the first six months of the year.
North American sales grew to 44.1m units, up 6.58% year-on-year and 5.3% over the previous quarter.
Gartner predicts that total mobile phone sales will reach 1.28bn units during 2008.
