Top 12 countries in terms of Facebook reach
More than two out of three Americans that were active online visited Facebook during March 2012, equalling roughly 152 million unique US visitors, according to new research. The findings, from Nielsen, found that internet audiences in Brazil, New Zealand and Italy were even more engaged than in the US, underscoring Facebook’s transcendence of borders around the world – and on the world wide web.

Top global brands on Facebook- Fan engagement highest in emerging markets (infographic)
Just days before the most anticipated initial public offering in history, new data looks at how powerful the 901 million-member Facebook platform is for big brands looking to expand their global footprint and penetrate emerging markets. The study, from social media analytics provider Socialbakers, found that Kraft had the fastest growing brands globally, with three products (Halls, Trident and Chiclets) in the top 5 movers.

Social search overtakes traditional directories for new customer acquisition
In the digitally advanced markets, social is moving ahead of directories as the main way small businesses get new customers. Latest research in the UK shows the scale of the channel shift, with more than a third of small firms are using Facebook for marketing (vs 27% using local directories). Twitter is also playing a growing role, with around a sixth of firms claiming they actively use it to recruit customers. The newness of social channels for small firms is under-researched in most countries, but findings from the UK could be indicative for other digitally advanced markets.

Top 5 smartphone makers in the world: Samsung leads the way
Samsung leads the way as the top smartphone seller in the world, followed by Apple, according to new research. The data, from research firm IDC, indicates that Samsung sold 42.2 million smartphones worldwide during the first quarter of 2012, earning it a 29.1% market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, helping it to secure a 24.2% market share.

Internet download speeds – international benchmarks
The Asia-Pacific region is the best place for broadband, with the US and Europe training behind, according to new research. According to Akamai's State of the internet report, 69 of the top 100 cities were placed in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by 24 cities in the United States and seven in Europe.

Tablets to become ‘primary computing device by 2016’
iPads and other tablets will be most users’ preferred device by 2016, with sales expected to reach 375 million, according to Forrester. Forrester analyst Frank Gillett made the claim in a blog post, adding that the company will be sharing the prediction in an upcoming report, “Tablets Will Rule the Future Personal Computing Landscape.” The company attributed the growth to big screens, daylong battery life, always-on capabilities and superior mobility.

Mobile marketing trends- demand for location-based services rise
There is a growing demand for location-based mobile services worldwide, with the likes of check-ins and mobile maps being the most demanded features for technology on the move, according to new research. The ‘Mobile Life‘ report from TNS, concludes that almost two-thirds of mobile users that don’t have location-based features would like to start using the feature, showing that there is huge untapped potential these services.

AP woos digital publishers with online video platform
The Associated Press has launched AP Video Hub, a global online video news platform, in a bid to attract online news publishers and portals to its services. The beta launch forms part of a new strategy at the global news agency, as it looks to branch out from its broadcast-centric business to cater for the growing number of online publishers. The new platform delivers video news from AP’s journalists in the field to digital customers’ desktops.

Citizen journalism – Latin America takes the lead
Attitudes to user-generated content differ around the world, with Latin America leading the world for ‘citizen journalism’, according to new research. 47% of internet users in Brazil and 44% in Argentina read UGC on newspaper websites, compared to only 35% in the UK and 26% in Germany, according to the study from Kantar Media.

Email deliverability: 17% of UK emails ‘never reach the inbox’
The number of emails reaching the inbox is rapidly decreasing and consequently, email marketers are continuing to pour money down the drain, according to a new report. The study, from email certification firm Return Path, shows that in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) 15% of email never reached the inbox while in the UK, the figure was higher at 17%.

‘Personal cloud’ forecast to overtake PCs by 2014
By 2014, personal online cloud services will take over from the personal computer as consumers download and use services on cloud-based systems on a variety of products, including smartphones and tablets, according to a new report. Leap year bug crashes UK Govt. cloud service
Microsoft’s Azure cloud service went down this week, taking out the UK government's CloudStore and disrupting many businesses in the process. The failure "appears" to have been triggered by extra day in the leap year, according to Microsoft. The disruption to Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud computing service, lasted for up to 23 hours and affected customers around the world.

100 firms sign up to '.brand' domain scheme
100 organisations have registered to get involved in ICANN’s plan to expand net domains beyond the likes of .com and .edu. The expansion concerns generic top-level domains, or GTLDs. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) spent years putting the new programme together so the internet could have web and email addresses ending in .paris, .canon, .hotel, and many others.

Connected devices 'to grow four-fold by 2014'
The number of web-connected devices will grow more than fourfold by 2020, reaching 50 billion in total, according to new report. The forecast, from networking giant Cisco, also asserts that there will be more than 7 billion mobile devices globally by 2015, and that a greater use of video will mean total internet traffic will more than quadruple by 2014.

ASOS boosted by international sales
UK online fashion retailer ASOS has assuaged fears of a slowdown, posting a 46% third quarter year-on-year jump in sales, boosted by sales overseas. The increase was mainly driven by international sales, up 93% in the final three months of 2011, while the 10 per cent rise in UK sales was still ahead of market expectations of 5%. The FTSE AIM company’s revenues rose 45% year-on-year to £150.5 million, while its retail gross margins increased 3%.

ICANN to go ahead with .brand domains despite concerns
Internet body ICANN is to continue with plans to expand the number of possible website addresses despite criticism from industry and concerns from some law enforcement groups. ICANN’s goal is to allow more innovation in website addresses and to open the space to the non-Latin alphabets. It has pledged a quick take-down for trademark violators under the new system. The body decides who gets to manage .com, .net and other domains to the right of the period in a URL.

Viewers of YouTube logged more than 1 trillion playbacks on the online video site in 2011, according to new figures from owner Google. The news comes as the video sharing site unvieled the most popular videos of the year. The staggering figure amounts to 140 views for every person on the planet, Google said.

Global adspend by medium: Internet to grow 16% by 2014
The internet will be the biggest contributor of new ad dollars to the global market, accounting for 52.9% of the growth in total expenditure until 2014, according to new research. The data, from ZenithOptimedia, found paid search will take the largest share of online adspend during that period, contributing 25.6%, followed by display at 22.6%, with classified at a much lower 4.7%.
