This chart shows the top 15 mobile apps by reach as of June 2014. Facebook has the highest reach among smartphone users with 73.6% downloading the Facebook app. Google have a several apps among the top 15, with Google Play, Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google+ all featuring. Google Maps outperforms its rival Apple Maps with 45.1% compared to Apple's 26.2% reach.

This chart shows the growth of the top 15 mobile apps between Q1 and Q3 2013. twitter's social networking effort Vine has seen the biggest growth of 2013 with a remarkable 403%, but still only reaches 3% of mobile users, the smallest reach of the top 3 apps. Vine's main competitor Instagram saw 130% growth in 2013, but reaches 109m mobile users. If Vine continues to grow at this rate the gap should close.

Google denies killing donkey with Streetview car

Trying to stay true to its mantra of ‘Don’t be Evil’, Google has assured web users that no animals were harmed in the making of its maps, after a picture surfaced on the web showing a donkey lying on the side of a road next to a Streetview car. The search engine giant was forced to issue the denial saying the animal was simply enjoying a dust bath.

Google goes underwater as coral reefs gets Street View treatment

Google has gone underwater for its latest addition to its street view service, offering 360 degree interactive tours of some of the world’s most famous coral reefs. The firm has partnered with the Catlin Seaview Survey to add areas from the Great Barrier Reef and several other underwater spots. Other areas include Lady Elliot Island, Molokini Crater, Maui, Hanauma Bay, Hawaii, Oahu, and Apo Island, Philippines.

Apple faces backlash over new iPhone mapping technology

Apple’s new mapping technology, which replaces Google Maps, has come under fire from users and businesses alike for a myriad of inaccuracies and misplaced landmarks. Amongst a wide range of complaints surfacing on Facebook and Twitter include missing towns (Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull), wrong locations (Uckfield in East Sussex) and satellite images of various locations, particularly in Scotland, being obscured by cloud. Some smaller roads and lanes do not even have road names and numbers in the UK. There is also no built-in information about public transportation.

Google Maps adds navigation and live traffic updates in India

Google has updated its mapping service in India, with two new features to boost navigation and traffic updates. The service now includes ‘turn-by-turn’ voice navigation through Google Maps Navigation (Beta). Google maps also now features live traffic information for major roads in select cities - Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.

Amazon snubs Google Maps for Nokia in new Kindle Fire

Online retailer Amazon has partnered with Nokia to provide mapping services for its new Kindle Fire, representing a significant snub to Google. Reuters reports that the new tablet device will have an integrated mapping feature and the partnership with Nokia help the company avoid using Google Maps. Amazon revealed that the original Kindle Fire is now sold out and the Kindle Fire 2 is expected to be announced at an event on 6 September 2012.

Apple 'likes' Facebook, drops Google Maps

Apple has ditched Google’s mapping software and made closer ties with Facebook, as the battle between the rival digital media giants intensifies. The move represents a major blow for Google, which stands to lose mobile advertising revenue and valuable insights about people's whereabouts if users of the popular iPhone and iPad devices switch to Apple's mapping service. Meanwhile, Apple is building Facebook into iOS 6, so users will be able to update their Facebook status by talking to their phones and declare that they "like" movies and apps in Apple's iTunes store.

Google revamps Maps with 3D technology

Google is updating its mapping service with 3D technology, as the internet giant looks to counter Apple’s decision to drop its service from its iPhone and iPads. The new service will offer zoomable, three-dimensional cityscapes, complete with top and side level views of buildings, streets and landscaping. The new features include 3D enhancements to Google Earth, a portable device for taking "street view" panoramic photos and offline access to Google Maps on Android phones.

Google+ boosts local search with Zagat user reviews

Google is integrating user review site Zagat into a new service 'Google+ Local', using online community content to refine local searches. Google bought Zagat in September for $125m, and its integration means that all of its subscription-only information is now available to everyone registered for Google+ Local. The new service will utilize Zagat's "poor-to-perfect" 0-to-30 rating scale and seeks to create "pages for all known places," including businesses and locations such as Yellowstone National Park.

Google bosses ‘knew about Street View data snooping’

Google could face further legal action for using its Street Cars to harvest data from resident’s unsecured WiFi networks. The details were revealed in a recent US Federal Communications Commission report that found the company's Street View cars not only photographed streets but recorded wi-fi network details, as well as "names, addresses, telephone numbers, URLs, passwords, email, text messages, medical records, video and audio files" back in 2010.

Google takes on Facebook Places and Foursquare with Latitude check-in tool

Google has updated its location service Latitude, letting mobile users check into spots on the go. The move sees the Internet giant encroach on the likes of Facebook’s Places service, alongside Foursquare and Gowalla. The check-in feature was added to a Latitude service that lets people with GPS-enabled Android smartphones share their whereabouts with selected friends.
