Google axes 7 more products to focus on Google+

Google is ditching seven more products, including Google Wave, Knol and Google Gears, in an effort to simplify its range of services. The move marks the third time this year that Google has culled several of its products at the same time after they had failed to take off. Google had previously announced its plans to kill off some of the projects on the list, such as Wave. But the new announcement has revealed details about when the switch-offs will occur. For example Wave will be retired in April, and Knol content will be taken offline in October.

Google Wave to close down following lack of demand

Google Inc. will end development of its Wave service, which lets users share images and documents, because customers were slow to adopt the technology. Google launched the real-time web collaboration tool at its annual I/O developer conference last year.

The company acknowledged that despite huge internal excitement over the possibilities offered by Wave, the tool did not catch on with users. “Google Wave set a high bar for what was possible in a web browser,” wrote Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of operations at Google in a blog post.

Google begins testing live editing tool Wave

Google has invited a limited number of people to help it test its new social editing tool, Google Wave. The tool combines email, instant messaging and wiki-style live editing and went on public trial yesterday, with its creators describing it as "how e-mail would look if it were invented today". The beta trial will be open to 100,000 invitees from 1600BST, each of whom can nominate five further people to "join the Wave".
