UK website visits clock 1.46bn during Cyber Week 2016

Almost 243 million visits to retail websites were recorded on the day of Black Friday, with a further 181 million visits on Cyber Monday, and a huge 777 million site visits across the whole weekend, according to new data.

Google dips below 90% in UK for first time in 5 years

October proved to be scary month not just for Halloween but also for Google’s share of the UK search market. October figures suggest 89.33% of all web searches in the UK were made using Google. Search engine visits drop for first time this year

Visits to major search engines in the UK fell for the first time this year, with sports terms such as BBC Sport proving more popular than Olympic specific search keywords, according to new data. As shown in the table, visits to the major search engines have actually decreased by 100 million since July 2012. Similarly, visits are down by 40 million since August 2011, making this month the first of 2012 in which we haven’t seen a year-on-year increase in search activity.

UK search wars: Bing and Yahoo lose further ground to Google

Google has increased its dominant position in the UK search market, accounting for more than 9 in 10 of all searches, according to the latest data. The research, from ComScore, indicates that UK Internet users made 2.2 billion visits to search engines in April 2012, up by 89 million visits compared to April 2011. The increase in search activity represents a 4.1 per cent year-on-year increase.

Instagram enters top 10 social networks in UK

Last month, Facebook announced the $1 billion acquisition of photo sharing app Instagram. This is a landmark deal for the acquisition of an app but Instagram became the 10th most visited social network in the UK in March 2012, showing the increasing appetite for photo sharing online. According to research from Experian Hitwise, Instagram received almost 13 million UK Internet visits in March 2012, a massive increase from the 300,000 visits it received in March 2011.

According to Hitwise data, in January 2012 Pinterest was the 46th most popular social network in the UK, up from 65th position in December 2011 and up from 966th position when it first started gaining traction in the UK in March 2011.

Facebook increased its share of UK social network visits during September, accounting for over half of all traffic during the month, according to new research. The data, released October 12 by digital market analysts Experian Hitwise, reveals the popularity of various social networking sites in terms of their market share of UK visitors to such sites.

Bing search share up to nearly 30% in US

Bing-powered searches took nearly 30% of the US market share last month, gaining ground on Google which saw its share fall, according to new research. The study from Experian Hitwise indicates that Bing-powered search took a 28.99% market share for all searches made in the US for the month of August. Bing powered search results increased by 3%, specifically search results saw a growth of 1% from July and Yahoo saw an increase of 5% (which is powered by Bing).

Top 50 online retailers in the UK

Clothing store Next was the highest riser amongst UK online retailers during July, according to the latest ‘Hot Shops List’ from Hitwise and IMRG. Travel websites bounced back this quarter with all of the major travel brands rising up the rankings since May 2011. One in five websites in the Hot Shops List this quarter came from the travel sector.

Having dropped out of the Top 50, cinema brands Odeon (ranked 37th) and Vue (44th) both returned to it this quarter. Cineworld also rose up the rankings in a strong three months for the movie industry.
