As the web spying scandal grows, the latest report from the Guardian claims that Microsoft worked with the US spies so they could access emails, including Hotmail, and listen in on Skype video calls to view the messages, before they were encrypted.

Europe as a whole dropped 6% in average time spent on web based email sites. Hotmail was the only site measured that reported a drop in average time spent with a 14% dip. Google Mail shows strong levels of engagement with an 18% increase since June 2011.

This chart shows the total number of unique visitors for each site in June 2012 and the percentage growth since June 2011. Google Mail shows considerable growth over the period with an 185 increase in users. Hotmail's growth has stalled with only a 1% increase in visitors. Russian email services Mail.Ru and Yandex Mail also saw huge growth with 22% and 37% increases.

European email trends: Hotmail leads pack but Gmail catching fast

Hotmail remains the most used web-based email service across Europe, but Gmail, Yahoo and Mail.ru are catching fast, according to new research. The study, from comScore, looked at internet usage in Europe during June 2012, showing that 397.2 million Europeans went online for an average of 25.9 hours.

Microsoft to replace Hotmail with ‘Outlook.com’

Microsoft is phasing out its iconic Hotmail webmail service, replacing it with a new email service that combines elements of Exchange, Skype and Hotmail into one tool, as the software giant looks to regain market share lost to Google's Gmail. The revamped service will help sort messages as they arrive and allow users to make internet calls on Skype, and has been designed to tackle the problem of "cluttered" inboxes.

Google and Microsoft ad networks hit by virus attack

For a brief period last week, cybercriminals managed to infect Google's and Microsoft's online ad networks with malicious advertisements that attacked users' PCs, according to a new report. The attacks started around 5th December and lasted a few days, sending victims who clicked on the ads to malicious Web pages, according to security consultancy Armorize.

Those pages took advantage of known software bugs to install backdoor programs that gave the attackers control of the victims' PCs, or to install software that made it appear as though the PCs were filled with malicious software.

Google reveals top UK search trends of 2009

Google has revealed the UK’s top search trends in 2009, with Swine Flu, the death of Jade Goody and the popularity of Susan Boyle topping the list.Google's annual "zeitgeist", which analyses the firm's search trends, revealedf that top website searches included Hotmail, eBay, Yahoo and social network Bebo. The fastest rising search queries of the year included the BBC's iPlayer and Bing.

"Britons had mixed feelings as they headed online this year to search for their favourite online tools, to learn about celebrities new and old, and to find a good bargain," said Google spokesperson Anthony House. "People searched about new sensations like Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle, but they also turned to the web to learn about the deaths of Stephen Gately, Jade Goody and Michael Jackson."

20,000 hacked email passwords published

More than 20,000 email passwords, the majority from Microsoft’s Hotmail, have been hacked and posted online, according to a report. Technology blog neowin.net claimed an anonymous user had posted Windows Live Hotmail account details on pastebin.com pastebin.com, a site used by developers to share code, on 1 October. Neowin originally reported that some 10,000 Hotmail accounts were published, but it now says that more over 20,000 accounts have now been compromised. Non-Hotmail passport accounts have been affected too.
