Computers in 5 years will touch, feel and…smell? (video)

The firm said that within 5 years computers will soon gain human-like abilities to receive input through senses like taste, touch and smell. Most recognised logos in the UK- Microsoft, Apple and Intel lead tech table

Among UK shoppers, the top three most recognisable logos for technology brands are Microsoft, Apple and Intel. They were identified with certainty by 92.7 per cent, 86 per cent and 85.6 per cent of consumers, respectively. The study, from WPP brand Ogilvy Action, indicates that social media brands filled up the remainder of the top five: 78.8 per cent of shoppers were certain that they recognised the Facebook logo (81.8 per cent of women vs. 75.7 per cent of men), while 73.9 per cent (again, more women than men) identified the Twitter logo.

Google boosts mobile with 200 patents from IBM

Google has acquired over 200 mobile-related patents and patent applications from IBM, as it looks to press further into the mobile device market while shielding itself from litigation from rivals such as Apple. Google acquired 187 patents and 36 patent applications from IBM at the end of December, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. The acquisition comes after Google purchased more than 1,000 patents from IBM last summer.

Top 100 global brands: Apple overtakes Google

Apple has overtaken Google as the 'world's most valuable brand', bringing an end to four years of dominance by the search giant, according to new research. The annual 'BrandZ' report from WPP-owned research agency Millward Brown, calculated brand power using a combination of quantitative customer research and financial analysis. According to the report, the value of Apple's brand grew to $153.5bnn while Google's brand slipped 2% to $111.4bn.

IBM launches virtual Wimbledon in Second Life

IBM is recreating a virtual Wimbledon tennis tournament in Second Life, writes Computing.co.uk. Users will be able to watch matches played out by avatars using real data from the championships. IBM is only the latest in a long line of firms who have tried to tap into the virtual world's appeal. The BBC recently made its first foray into the online world when it broadcast a special virtual version of the 'Money Programme' devoted to financial news about Second Life.
New figures from comScore Networks show that Second Life attracted 1.3m users in March, up 46% on figures for January. 61% of active Second Life users are based in Europe (777,000), with 19% in North America (243,000) and 13% in Asia (167,000). Germany comes top of the results with 209,000 users, just ahead of the US with 207,000 users.
