Google launches iPad rival ‘Nexus 7’

Google has launched its first own-brand tablet computer, taking on Apple, Amazon and Microsoft in an increasingly crowded and fast-growing market. The company has partnered with Taiwanese manufacturer Asus to launch the Nexus 7, a 7in tablet computer built around Google's popular Android software. Priced at $199 (£127), Google's Nexus 7 is both more affordable and physically smaller than many of its rivals. Like the Nexus 7, Amazon's Kindle Fire has a 7in screen and is priced at £127.

Mobile traffic ‘converting at rate of 3.1%’- study

Mobile is accounting for 7.85% of all online sales in the UK, according to new research. The study, from Affiliate Window’s second annual m-commerce white paper, looks at mobile growth trends. On average across all mobile platforms, mobile raffic is converting at 3.1%, and 10.94% of traffic is now mobile (including tablets).

Yahoo woos iPad users with 'Axis' search tool

Yahoo has launched a search tool that its claims will offer users a better way to search the internet on their iPhone or iPad or on a desktop browser. Yahoo Axis displays search results without users having to leave their current web page, and provides a preview of the pages that results link to in an effort to overhaul the modern method of search.

Breaking into the top 25 App Store chart- How many downloads do you need?

To make it into Apple’s lucrative ‘top free 25 list’, apps require approximately 38,400 daily downloads, according to new data. The research, from app tracking firm Distimo, used the company’s monitoring tool to calculate apps downloaded. The study found that approximately 38,400 daily downloads are needed to make it onto the top 25 free apps chart.

Tablets to become ‘primary computing device by 2016’

iPads and other tablets will be most users’ preferred device by 2016, with sales expected to reach 375 million, according to Forrester. Forrester analyst Frank Gillett made the claim in a blog post, adding that the company will be sharing the prediction in an upcoming report, “Tablets Will Rule the Future Personal Computing Landscape.” The company attributed the growth to big screens, daylong battery life, always-on capabilities and superior mobility.

iPhones to drive Apple’s value ‘past $1 trillion by 2014’

Apple is set to become the world’s first 41 trillion company by 2014, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, boosted by sales of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. Munster says that Apple should target USD910 per share within 12 months, buoyed by potential product releases such as the iPhone 5, before surpassing the USD1 trillion barrier a year later, driven by iPhone sales.

Sky to launch online TV for non-subscribers

Technology giant Apple has reported its best quarter ever for revenue and earnings as it sold more iPhones, iPads and Mac computers than in any three-month period in its history. The company smashed Wall Street projections with net income of 13.06 billion dollars on revenue of 46.33 billion dollars in the three-month period ended December 31, over 7 billion dollars more than analysts had expected and a 74 percent increase over its quarterly revenue from a year earlier.

Online shopping sales are forecast to grow between 18% and 22% during Christmas 2012, exceeding the rate of growth in 2011, according to a new report. According to Logan Tod & Co.'s 6th Annual Online Future Shopping Index, 26% of online shoppers are indicating that they plan to spend even more online in December 2012. Brits ‘to spend £550m online on Christmas and Boxing Day’

UK shoppers will spend more than £550m online over the two-day holiday period of Christmas and Boxing Day this year, according to new research. The report, from the IMRG, forecasts that Brits will spend £186.4m on Christmas Day itself, while the figure will surge to £367.8m on Boxing Day. Total online spend over the two-day period will represent a 12% year-on-year rise with the increased number of smartphone and tablet devices generating the bulk of the demand, according to the IMRG.

iTunes Match launches in UK for £22 a year

iTunes has launched its much-anticipated ‘Match’ service in the UK, letting users store and stream their music collection online by matching owned songs with those already existing in Apple’s music library. iTunes Match scans a users’ iTunes library, including songs acquired from other MP3 download sites or ripped from CDs. Users can register up to 25,000 songs.
