Brits ‘use Facebook Places 5 times more than Foursquare’

The top UK attractions, such as the O2, Wembley Stadium and Hyde Park, attracted five times more online ‘check-ins’ from Facebook Places that Foursquare, according to a new study. The findings come from VisitBritain's Love UK's Top50 Places Facebook campaign, which was developed by Betapond. While nearly 1 million (955,437) check-ins originated from Facebook Places just 176,724 came from Foursquare.

Google AdWords phone numbers become clickable and trackable

Google has updated its paid search tool AdWords to make all advertiser’s mobile numbers clickable and trackable. Google has been offering a click-to-call feature for AdWords since January 2010. Previously, AdWords users who placed a phone number in their ad copy could only get a call if the searcher entered the number manually. Now, the phone numbers inside the creative are clickable by default.

Facebook drops ‘Places’ for universal location tagging

Facebook is phasing out its 'Places' feature in its iPhone and Android apps, as the social network expands it location tool to photos, wall posts and more. The move will see Facebook Places removed as a standalone feature in the company's iPhone and Android apps. When it launched last year, the feature was presented as a potential Foursquare-killer, bringing the idea of mobile check-ins to Facebook's several hundred million users.

Zoopla debuts house price ‘heatmaps’ for UK

Property search and information website has launched heatmaps which show the average current value of homes across the UK in a visual format. The new heatmaps can be found on all maps across the Zoopla website and may be viewed at varying zoom levels include down to individual postcodes. In addition to the new heatmaps, Zoopla has also added a variety of other local property information that provides an essential research tool for potential house hunters.

Google debuts ‘AdWords Express’ for local businesses

Google has launched ‘AdWords Express’ in the US, an updated version of its paid search designed to get local businesses in the US up and running with online advertising in under five minutes. Google claims the new tool is more streamlined than its standard AdWords setup process.

Advertisers only need to put in basic business information to create their ad, then set which page they want it to point to. The AdWords Express algorithm will handle keywords, automatically figuring out which search queries to place ads.

Yellow Pages book to be phased out in online shake-up

Yell is to switch its core business online, phasing out its iconic ‘Yellow Pages’ directory within four years. The move will see Yell revamp as an online hub for local businesses, as consumers increasingly look to the web for information. Yell, which employs 2,900 staff in the UK, sees 75% of its business being online within four years, compared with 25% at the moment.

Yell will also start selling services to firms registered on its site, such as loyalty schemes, marketing initiatives and computer software to help with their accounting and payment schemes to save them money on financial transactions.

Google debuts 'What Do You Love' search tool

Google has launched a tool that searches the internet for blogs, pictures, videos, and more based on the answer to the question "What do you love?" The new site, at, features a query box for answers to that question and a blue button icon with a white heart. Searches return a collage of options including finding what you love nearby, exploring it in 3D graphics, calling someone about it, and seeing related patents, trends or news. The tool was built to showcase Google creations for uncovering what the internet has to offer about topics.

Microsoft and Yell offer online ad service to small businesses

Microsoft and Yell have partnered to offer a set of online advertising and business tool to assist small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) reach and engage consumers. Following the Yahoo! and Microsoft search alliance, Yell will join forces to offer search, mobile and local advertising solutions to small and medium businesses and to make the most of emerging business models delivered through the cloud.

Under the plans, Yell will also offer the full suite of Microsoft's SMB productivity and business software and cloud services, including Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics CRM and emerging SMB-focused communications solutions.

Most smartphone users ‘actively seeking local info’

Over four in five (81%) of UK smartphone users have looked for local information on their mobile devices, with the numbers even higher in the US, France, Germany and Japan, according to a new global study. The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) has published a new whitepaper entitled “Getting Started — A Brand Marketer’s Guide to the Mobile Web and Mobile Apps: Not an Either/or Proposition.”

Top 20 UK apps: Google maps tops list

Google owns three out of the five top ranked apps, with mapping, the weather and Facebook proving the most popular mobile tools for Brits on the go, according to new research from comScore and GSMA. The study also showed that Apple’s iOS accounted for 65% of apps being used, more than double its closest rival Android with application usage at 31 percent.

Google has reportedly applied for a licence to operate an online mapping service in China, as the search giant once again looks to capitalize on the world’s biggest internet market. Dow Jones Newswires cites ‘an official’, saying the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping was reviewing the application from Beijing Guxiang Information Technology Co., which operates Google's mapping service in China.

Connection now beats location? Rightmove lists broadband speed of all homes

UK property site Rightmove is set include broadband speeds as a searchable criteria on all of its properties, as internet connectivity becomes an increasingly vital part of modern life. Rightmove has struck a deal with BT to list the internet speeds of the one million homes listed on its website. The property site is planning to list broadband speed alongside standard information, such as the number of bedrooms and whether the property has a garage or garden.

Mobile augmented reality on rise as top brands get virtual

An increasing number of leading brands, retailers and mobile vendors are investing in mobile augmented reality (AR) applications and services, with global revenues expected to approach $1.5 bn by 2015, according to a new report.

The new report from Juniper Research has found that the installed base of AR capable smartphones had increased from 8 million in 2009 to more than 100 million in 2010, while at the same time, AR apps – initially the preserve of smaller development companies and/or researchers at technological institutes – were now increasingly created/facilitated by the larger players.

Google has updated its location service Latitude, letting mobile users check into spots on the go. The move sees the Internet giant encroach on the likes of Facebook’s Places service, alongside Foursquare and Gowalla. The check-in feature was added to a Latitude service that lets people with GPS-enabled Android smartphones share their whereabouts with selected friends.

Google offers virtual art gallery tours with Street View

Google has launched a new site that offers virtual tours using Street View technology, the ability to build private collections and ultra-high resolution images. The site, simply called 'Art Project', currently includes 17 museums, offering 360 degree images of selected rooms. So far 385 rooms are navigable, with more to be added soon. Each Museum involved also chose one artwork to be photographed using "gigapixel" photo capturing technology, resulting in an image on the computer containing seven billion pixels and providing detail not visible to the naked eye.

Facebook gives Brits local offers as ‘Deals’ launches in UK

Facebook has launched its ‘deals’ service in the UK, giving users of its Places app local offers sent to their mobile phone, ready to redeem. Following the launch in the US in November 2010, Deals launched this week in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Part of Facebook Places, Facebook Deals helps users find offers in their local area from their mobile or discover money-saving tips from friends via their News Feed. When a Facebook Places user "Checks In" a list of Nearby Places will appear and a yellow ticket will show next to Places that are offering deals.

Gap gives away 10,000 free jeans on Facebook Places in US

Gap is giving away 10,000 pairs of jeans today (November 5) in the US, via Facebook Places, the social network's recently launched location tool. Starting at the time of store opening at 10 am EST, Gap is offering one free pair of its basic five-pocket jeans to the first people who visit a men's or women's Gap store in the US and "check in" via Facebook Places while they're there.

Facebook Mobile offers ‘deals’ based on user location

Facebook has launched a new ‘deals’ service on its mobile application, which send users special offers to users based on their location. The move offers advertisers another way to target Facebook users geographically, and the social network looks to boost its ad revenue. The service will initially launch in the US, and Facebook has not disclosed when ‘Deals’ will roll-out internationally.

The service lets Facebook Mobile users look for a list of "nearby places," with deals being denoted by a yellow price tag or sticky to the right of them. There are four kinds of deals: individual deals, loyalty deals, friend deals, and charity deals. The service also offers a ‘virtual punchcard’ for loyalty deals, with discounts for those users who bring new friends and customers.

Google admits to copying email and Wi-Fi passwords from Steet View cars

Google has admitted to copying household computer passwords and emails while gathering images using its Street View cameras, adding that it is determined to learn lessons from the mistake.

Google collected information from wireless networks while its vehicles drove around residential streets taking photographs for its Street View mapping product, which launched in 2008. Computer passwords, emails and web addresses were copied from private households which did not have encrypted wi-fi access. Google said the personal information was collected inadvertently.

Google adds more location tools to search

Google has added tools to the left-hand panel of its search results, letting users change location details. Google previously pinpointed a users’ location automatically, but the new tool lets users either change it completely or make it more specific, including by postcode.

Users need to click on 'Change location' to update the information. Google will then automatically run the search again with the new information. The change means the location information is now always visible, as opposed to automatically clearing it from the screen.The feature is being rolled out gradually globally over the coming weeks.
