Cross-platform trends- How US consumers watch from screen to screen

The average American watches nearly five hours of video each day, 98% of which they watch on a traditional TV set, according to a new report. The Nielsen Cross-Platform Report found that although this ratio is less than it was just a few years ago, and continues to change, the fact remains that Americans are not turning off. They are shifting to new technologies and devices that make it easier for them to watch the video they want, whenever and wherever they want.

Britain’s Got Talent voting app goes live

ITV and FremantleMedia have launched two new ways for viewers to vote for their favourite Britain’s Got Talent contestants via their mobile phone. Viewers will be able to vote via their iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch directly from the Britain’s Got Talent app, which has already received over 500,000 downloads across the series and seen peak traffic of up to 130k users per episode interacting via the ‘buzzer’.

Google boosts search ads with video version of AdWords

Google has launched a video version of its AdWords search system, aimed at small businesses that want to utilise the video medium but can't afford TV commercial slots. Previously, connecting ads to videos in YouTube based on search terms has been restricted to large companies with big marketing budgets. The new service sees Google open the "do it yourself" system to videos.

UK ISPs ordered to block The Pirate Bay

Internet providers in the UK have been forced to stop their users accessing The Pirate Bay file sharing site. The Swedish website hosts links to download mostly pirated free music and video. Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media must all prevent their users from accessing the site. A sixth ISP, BT, requested "a few more weeks" to consider their position on blocking the site.

As connected TVs start to go on sale, new research reveals that 68% of viewers noticed the ad placements and 1 in 3 of those clicked through. Spotify takes on Pandora with online radio in US

Spotify is expanding its US services a year after the Swedish firm entered the market, developing an Internet radio service that would directly challenge Pandora Media. Top 10 TV advertisers in the US

TV adspend in the US rose by 2.4% last year, with Procter and Gamble, AT&T and General Motors the biggest spenders, according to research. The findings, from research from Kantar Media, indicate that the adspend on syndicated national segment is up 15.4%. Meanwhile, Spanish-language stations are enjoying an 8.3% surge and cable is seeing a 7.7% leap in adspend.

James Murdoch quits as BSkyB boss

James Murdoch has stepped down as chairman of BSkyB, just six weeks after giving up a similar role at News International, following the phone hacking scandal that rocked the News Corp media empire last year. Video game sales overtake DVDs in UK- report

Sales of video games in the UK have pipped those of videos (DVDs and Blu-Rays) for the first time, making the gaming industry the country's biggest entertainment sector, according to new research. The study, from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA, indicate that sales of £1.93bn in 2011. By contrast, sales of DVDs and other video formats totalled £1.80bn, while music pulled in £1.07bn.

Streaming overtakes DVDs at LoveFilm

LoveFilm customers are now streaming more films online than they are renting DVDs, the company has revealed. In February, the Amazon-owned company saw the number of movies and TV shows accessed through internet-connected devices exceed DVDs, Blu-rays and games rented by more than 20 per cent.

Angry Birds: The Movie? Nickelodeon to broadcast first cartoon

Nickelodeon has won the rights to broadcast the first Angry Birds animated short film. The cartoon will promote the latest Angry Birds ‘Space’ game, and will explain how the feathered fighters got into space in the first place. It will also reveal six new birds. The game is available to play for free supported by adverts, but around 25% of downloads are understood to be for the paid, advert-free versions on smartphones and tablets.

iPlayer debuts on Xbox with Kinect voice and gesture features

The BBC has launched the iPlayer on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console free of charge, with plans for a launch on Sky’s Anytime platform now in the works. The move makes the BBC’s online catch-up service available all the UK's major gaming platforms. The deal has taken three years to be agreed after Microsoft initially wanted to charge for all content.
