Google – Motorola deal gets green light from US and Europe

Google’s $12.5bn acquisition of Motorola Mobility has been backed by regulators in Europe and the US. The European Commission ruled the deal would not raise competition issues in the market for operating systems for devices like mobile phones or tablets. Regulators in the US agreed, although both authorities vowed to monitor the company and rivals' use of patents.

Google-Motorola deal waits on EC approval in January

The European Commission said it expects to rule on Google’s planned $12.5bn acquisition of Motorola Mobility by January 10 after the search giant submitted an application for regulatory clearance. Google announced its intentions to buy Motorola back in August, giving the internet giant a significant technology boost to the Android platform in the increasingly competitive smartphone and tablets market.

Top 5 mobiles and platforms in the US: Samsung and Android lead the pack

More than 80 million Americans now own smartphones, with Samsung and Android being the top manufacturer and operating system respectively, according to new data. comScore has revealed key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending July 2011.

The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.5 percent market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 41.8 percent market share.

Google becomes phone maker- buys Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn

Google has bought Motorola Mobility, the devices arm of communications giant Motorola, for $12.5bn (£7.7bn), giving a significant technology boost to the Android platform in the increasingly competitive smartphone and tablets market. Google stands to gain a large number of patents with the purchase, which will aid it in the on-going litigation that Android faces. Despite Google's promises of keeping Android an open platform, the move could cause conflicts with Google's partners, such as HTC and Samsung.
