Global market share by operating systems

This chart shows the percent change in global market share for smartphone operating systems between 2012 and 2013. Android has reported the biggest growth in market share with a 15% increase. This growth can be attributed to the variety of phones that are Android enabled. iOS, which is only available on the Apple iPhone, dropped in market share by nearly 5%. Microsoft's Window's Phone also overtook Blackberry during 2013.

Nokia brings Apple maps rival to iPhone and iPad

Nokia has launched ‘Here’, a rebranded version of its mapping application, on Apple iTunes for iPhone, iPad as well as iPod touch, offering an alternative to Apple’s controversial native maps app.
The app features driving directions, live traffic view, satellite view, public transport line view and offline view, among others. The move comes after Apple removed Google Maps as its default navigation application.

Global mobile trends 2012: Smartphone sales up 47% as feature phones dip 3%

Samsung has extended its lead over Apple’s iPhone in the global smartphone market, while Android now accounts for a massive 72% chunk of the smartphone OS market, according to new data. The research, from Gartner, found that worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users reached almost 428 million units in the third quarter of 2012, a 3.1% decline from the third quarter of 2011.

Google’s Android mobile operating system made up 75% of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2012, far ahead of Apple's 14.9%, according to new data. The study from market analysis firm IDC attributed the jump in market share to the faltering market reach for Nokia’s Symbian platform and Research In Motion’s Blackberry mobile OS. According to the study Google Android smartphone shipments increased by 91.5% during Q3 2012.

iPhone 5 revealed: 4G, longer screen and a £529 price tag

Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone, offering 4G connectivity, a longer screen and improved hardware and software, all for £529. Apple said the handset would work on Everything Everywhere's (EE) 4G LTE network in the UK. The handset will ship on 21 September and is powered by new A6 processor that is twice as fast at graphics and processing, while RAM memory will double to 1GB. However, it does not feature a NFC (near field communication) chip to allow it to make touchless payments. In addition, the handset does not offer wireless charging like Nokia's Lumia 920.

Apple and Google will dominate the smartphone market in coming years, accounting nearly 80% share of the smartphone market by 2016, according to a new report. The research, from IHS iSuppli Wireless Communications, said that Nokia's Symbian operating system will be practically nonexistent by next year as a result of the smartphone merger between the Finnish giant and Microsoft.
