Top ad execs blast Microsoft for 'Do Not Track' defaults in IE 10

In an open letter, an influential US-based lobbying group for the advertising industry has criticised Microsoft's decision to enable Do Not Track as the default setting in Internet Explorer 10. The Association of National Advertisers wrote a letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, saying the "do not track" default setting would "undercut the effectiveness of our members’ advertising..." and ultimately "harm consumers, hurt competition, and undermine American innovation and leadership in the Internet economy."

Procter & Gamble teams with Google for Football YouTube channel

FMCG giant Procter & Gamble has struck a deal with Google to create a football-based YouTube channel to promote its Gillette male grooming brand. The ‘Gillette Football Club’ will show highlights and goals from several major international leagues, though the channel won’t feature any action from England’s Premier League, as the online rights are owned by Yahoo.

Video viral case study: P&G’s ‘Olympic Moms’ ad gets over 4m YouTube views

Procter & Gamble embarked on the company’s biggest campaign in its 174 year history, using its Olympic sponsor status to push an emotive message celebrating mothers worldwide (a key demographic for the FMCG brand). P&G’s ‘Best Job’ video has taken off since launching April 17. More than 4m people watched the video on the main site, which has been seeded in different languages to appeal to different territories.

Case study: Procter & Gamble takes Olympic sponsorship to 34 brands

Procter & Gamble's Olympic sponsorship is set to generate an addition $500m in sales according to its CEO. This case study looks at how the FMCG giant is using the digital channel to push its umbrella Olympic message across 34 of its brands. In announcing the firm’s positive Q2 results, Proctor and Gamble CEO Bob McDonald has cited P&G's Olympics sponsorship as an example of its "scale brought to life". Covering 34 brands and 4m stores over six months, this umbrella campaign should yield $500m in incremental sales, and a payback 50% higher than single brand efforts, he predicted.

Digital case study: Ace uses soap-opera style mystery to create awareness and triple sales

The Brazilian campaign saw detergent brand Ace use consumer insight and an integrated use of media to reach 8.7 million people in less than three months. Ace created a campaign in soap opera style, an episode with 5 different endings, presenting five suspects for a great mystery: Whose is the grubby bra? The suspects defended themselves. The mystery was heated trough placement in TV shows, films on Facebook page and consistently engaging digital content. It also led to word of mouth in Twitter, blogs, radio stations talking about it and parody. The campaign reached 2.3 million people on Facebook with more than 60,000 fans and 227,000 visualizations on YouTube.

Top global brands on Facebook- Fan engagement highest in emerging markets (infographic)

Just days before the most anticipated initial public offering in history, new data looks at how powerful the 901 million-member Facebook platform is for big brands looking to expand their global footprint and penetrate emerging markets. The study, from social media analytics provider Socialbakers, found that Kraft had the fastest growing brands globally, with three products (Halls, Trident and Chiclets) in the top 5 movers.

US: Paid search ad spend dips as big brands cut back

Both paid search and display advertising fell around 6% in the last quarter of 2011 in the US, as big advertisers tightened their belts. For the year, paid search dipped nearly 3% but display ads rose 5.5%, according to a new study. The findings, from research from Kantar Media, indicate that major US advertisers including Procter & Gamble, AT&T and General Motors significantly reduced their advertising spend last year.

Procter & Gamble is to ditch traditional CRM and CTR ad payment models in favour of a new ‘cost-per-engagement’ scheme. The move will see publishers that run ads for the FMCG giant’s brands, paid depending on specific metrics used to measure their engagement with the advert.
