Top 20 social platforms: Change in active use

This chart shows the change in active users for the top 20 global social networks (excluding China). Respondents were asked the question 'Which of the following services have you used/contributed to In the last month?". Facebook-owned photo sharing service Instagram showed the biggest increase over the period with 23%. Interestingly Sina Weibo, a social network based in China, attracted users from other regions. Facebook saw a drop in usage over the period with -3% of people posting.

Reddit co-founder’s death sparks rise in Hacktivist attacks

The death of Reddit co-creator and online rights activist Aaron Swartz has sparked a rise in politically-motivated hack attacks, often dubbed ‘Hacktivism’. Swartz took his own life just weeks before the start of his federal trial related to charges in 2011 that he downloaded nearly 5 million academic articles from JSTOR, a subscription service used by the MIT, in a bid to distribute them free on file-sharing sites. Days after news of Swartz' suicide, hackers affiliated with Anonymous launched an attack against the US Department of Justice and the MIT.

Obama crashes Reddit after hosting Q&A

US President Barack Obama fronted a surprise ‘Ask Me Anything’ chat with the public on Reddit this week, as he gears up for his re-election campaign. The move sparked a flood of traffic that crashed the popular bulletin board site.Within 15 minutes of Obama’s introduction, the forum had almost 2000 comments and, as the site struggled with the flood of traffic, it began intermittently crashing.
