BT takes on Sky with Sports channel

BT has secured rights to 38 live Premier League matches, British rugby union and the women's tennis tour, with plans to offer its new sports channels "as good as free" to existing customers.

Search engine visits drop for first time this year

Visits to major search engines in the UK fell for the first time this year, with sports terms such as BBC Sport proving more popular than Olympic specific search keywords, according to new data. As shown in the table, visits to the major search engines have actually decreased by 100 million since July 2012. Similarly, visits are down by 40 million since August 2011, making this month the first of 2012 in which we haven’t seen a year-on-year increase in search activity.

Sky debuts pay-as-you-go online movie service

Sky has launched Now TV, its pay -as-you-go online TV service Now TV, offering movies from 99p or £15 for a month’s subscription. The service will initially be available for PC, Mac, and selected Android devices, with iOS devices due to get it later in July. It will come to Xbox, PS3, and Roku before the end of the year.

Sky to launch online TV for non-subscribers

Broadcaster BSkyB is to launch an online television service to non-Sky customers to combat a sharp slowdown in growth of its customer base. The channel will launch the online TV service in the first half of 2012, giving users access to Sky movies and eventually Sky Sports, on flexible tariffs, without signing a contract. The new Sky internet TV service will stream content to computers, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles and smart TVs.

Sky tests online local news service in North East UK

Sky is to test an online news and sports service next year, dedicated to local content from Tyne and Wear, as the broadcaster looks to capitalise on the demand for local online content and the lucrative online classifieds market. The site will feature video, text and images produced by the team, along with additional support from Sky News and Sky Sports News.

App usability study: Newspapers come out on top

News and Media Apps have topped the first ever App benchmark study from eDigitalResearch, assessing the usability and customer journey across almost 50 of the most popular mobile Apps across a variety of categories. The Sky Sports News App rated highest overall with a top score of 89.9%.

Feedback shows that users found the App simple and easy to use with clearly presented menus and navigational links. They particularly liked the range of additional features, including direct links to live television and radio streams.
