Twitter case study: Toyota offers sweets for tweets

To promote its new Etios car in South Africa, Toyota promised to make people smile. The Sweets for Tweets installation, created by HelloComputer and ThingKing, did just that by rewarding virtual smile tweets with real-life candy via a Wonka-like contraption. The campaign matched the new Toyota Etios tagline, “Here to make you smile”, promoting a positive brand message and putting the car across as a fun machine to drive.

Social media's influence on purchase decisions

The influence of social media on purchase decisions increased across all but one of the regions surveyed in 20122. the global average has risen by 3% since 2010. The region that saw the biggest increase was 'Middle East and Africa' with 10%. Social media's influence dropped by 5% in Latin America (the only region that reported a decrease).

Indian online retailer Flipkart gets $150m funding boost

South African media giant Naspers is said to be investing $150 million (Rs 834 crores) in online retailer Flipkart, a deal which would secure the company’s finances for the next three years. Nasper and Iconiq Capital are the new investors in Flipkart, with the former pumping in US$90 million, and the money will be used on expanding supply chain capacity and growing its talent pool.

Developing markets 'to deliver half global adspend growth'

Over the next three years nearly half (48%) of all the world’s growth in ad expenditure will come from just ten developing markets, including China, Russia, and Indonesia, according to new research. The study, from ZenithOptimedia, predicts that the four BRIC markets alone (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are forecast to account for 33% of global growth.

Mobile web access ‘outpacing fixed-line internet access’

Mobile is increasingly the primary platform for internet access, with 18% no longer using fixed-line to access the Internet at all, according to a new global survey. The Global Consumer Survey (GCS) report from MEF, the global community for mobile content and commerce, found that security fears are the biggest barrier to take-up of mobile web access.
