As we come towards the end of 2012, research shows that this year really has been the year of the smartphone. According to Gartner, global sales have risen 47% year-on-year, much to the benefit of Samsung and the Android platform primarily. But Apple has still managed to capture more of the investment in mobile advertising. Indeed, mobile advertising is looking increasingly attractive as research shows that viewer ad recall is much higher on the handheld device than on TV or the web. A great benefit as more consumer start to research and purchase physical goods through the mobile channel.

And as the developed world equip themselves with the latest devices for the poorer developing markets Google is starting to offer a simple Free Zone mobile service to capture the 'next billion' Internet users.

It also looks like Facebook has weathered the potential storm of its third stage of share sales with a rising stock and increasingly healthy looking business as the year draws to an end.

Vimeo starts selling pay-per-view movies

Online video service Vimeo is to launch a pay-per-view movie service in a bid to compete with Google-owned rival YouTube. The IAC-owned platform is launching the pay-to-view service with six movies that will be available across the US, UK and the rest of the world.

DuckDuckGo attacks Google: “There’s no regular search anymore”

Search engine DuckDuckGo has released a video that aims to show that there’s no such thing as impersonal Google results. The video shows results from an experiment the team did in which more than 100 people searched the same topics while logged out of Google. Unlike Google, DuckDuckGo does not track user’s search habits or store search results. s very strong on privacy, and doesn't store your search results.

Vimeo debuts ‘tip jar’ for ad-free content

Video sharing site Vimeo is introducing a ‘tip jar’ to help contributors monetise their content without ads. The ‘tip jar’ lets a viewer click a button by a video to contribute money to the creator. For its part, Vimeo will take 15% commission. The IAC/InterActiveCorp-owned firm is also planning to launch pay-per-view functionality on the video platform, as it looks to monetise its audience of 75 million viewers a month.

In an interview with (embedded below) CEO Kery Trainor said the platform is interested to see "just what are the types of content that work in a channel like this".

Vimeo takes on YouTube with site revamp

Video-sharing website Vimeo has launched a new look as it aims to take on YouTube and improve the "discoverability" of its content. Vimeo has invited existing users to join a closed pilot while the final touches are fine-tuned. The site attracts 65 million unique users a month. By comparison, YouTube deals with four billion video views every day.
