Facebook adds voice record function to Messenger app

Facebook has added a voice record feature to its Messenger apps for Android and iOS, with plans to introduce full voice calls in the near future. Instead of typing messages or sending photos and smiley faces, users can now record and send quick voice messages. To send a voice message, users need to tap the “+” sign next to the text field, and a new option to record a message will appear. Users then tap and hold the record button to record a message, and release it to send.

Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype

In a controversial move, Microsoft is set to close down its free iconic instant messenger service Windows Live Messenger, replacing it with Skype, the video chat service it bought in May last year. Windows Live Messenger was first released as MSN Messenger back in 1999, and is still behind only Yahoo! Messenger in the global IM market. However, Windows Live Messenger’s audience shrank by 48% last year, according to internet analysis firm Comscore. Windows Live Messenger is used by over 330 million people but Skype has over 600 million users.

Microsoft to replace Hotmail with ‘’

Microsoft is phasing out its iconic Hotmail webmail service, replacing it with a new email service that combines elements of Exchange, Skype and Hotmail into one tool, as the software giant looks to regain market share lost to Google's Gmail. The revamped service will help sort messages as they arrive and allow users to make internet calls on Skype, and has been designed to tackle the problem of "cluttered" inboxes.

Controversial Skype ads attack Facebook and Twitter

Internet telephony firm Skype has launched a controversial outdoor ad campaign suggesting some of the world’s biggest social networks are ‘degrading humanity’. The ads form part of a $12m marketing campaign encouraging users to switch from Facebook and Twitter to Skype as a more visceral communications medium. The ads ask: “Technology is changing the way people think and operate, but is it also degrading humanity?”

Microsoft $8.5bn Skype takeover confirmed

Microsoft has secured its $8.5bn acquisition of internet telephony firm Skype, after getting approval from both the European Commission (EC) and the US Federal Trade Commission. The deal, was first announced in May this year, marks the introduction of Skype as a new business division within Microsoft.

Facebook to forge Web phone deal with Skype?

Facebook is trying to work out a deal to integrate Skype's Internet phone service into the social network's site, according to reports. Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal reports that the deal is expected to be announced in the next few weeks, would enable Facebook users to have a voice chat and video chat with their Facebook friends using Skype services.

Neither Facebook nor Skype would comment on the reports. The move would again pit Facebook against Google, which announced last month that it would offer the ability to make phone calls over the Internet via its popular Gmail service.

Google takes on Skype with Global IP buy

Google is buying Norwegian internet telephony company Global IP Solutions for $68m (£47.6m) to boost its online voice and video services. Global IP Solutions makes the underlying processing software for voice and video calls over internet networks that will help boost Google Voice and other IP telephony based services.

The deal will enable Google to step up competition with traditional telecoms companies and IP telephony firm Skype. The deal will also mean that Google will own some of the technology that supports Cisco's WebEx system, IBM's Lotus Sametime, and the instant messaging systems.
