Global music trends- Streaming leads growth as physical sales drop 12%

Music streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer are leading driving much of its sales growth during this year, according to new research. The Global Music Forecast issued by Strategy Analytics found that digital music revenue worldwide will pass the £5 billion mark this year. The on-demand services are predicted to generate £696m for the global music industry in 2012 - a rise of 40 per cent.

We7 transforms from free music streaming to personalised online radio firm

Ad-supported on-demand music service We7 has transformed into a personalised radio station, as the UK-based free music pioneer struggles to keep pace with rival Spotify. Users will now have to register their details with the site if they want access the 50 on demand tracks a month every free user is eligible to request. We7 users can now type in a song, genre or artist to have a personalised radio experience created for them in a similar vein to and Pandora. The company says higher supply costs are a factor: Music Licensing body the PRS charges 0.065p per play for an internet radio service, versus 0.085p per play for an on-demand service.

we7 takes ad-funded music site to Ireland

Music streaming service we7 has launched in Ireland this week, marking the first move out of the UK for the company since it was established with former Genesis front-man, Peter Gabriel in 2008. As well as being able to create personal radio stations and request songs for free from we7’s 6.5 million track music catalogue, Irish listeners will also be able to sign up to we7’s monthly Premium and Premium Plus packages.
