Facebook debuts 'Place Tips' with local ads

Facebook has started highlighting local sights and restaurant tips based on a user’s location, as the social network takes on apps like FourSquare and Yelp.

Top 15 global apps

This chart shows the top 15 mobile apps and the percentage of mobile internet users that they reach. Google Maps reaches the most mobile internet users with 54%, equating to over 474 million users. Mobile only social networks Vine, Instagram and Facebook Messenger attract a large portion of mobile internet visitors, with 3%, 12% and 22% respectively.

Top 15 fastest growing apps: Global

This chart shows the growth of the top 15 mobile apps between Q1 and Q3 2013. twitter's social networking effort Vine has seen the biggest growth of 2013 with a remarkable 403%, but still only reaches 3% of mobile users, the smallest reach of the top 3 apps. Vine's main competitor Instagram saw 130% growth in 2013, but reaches 109m mobile users. If Vine continues to grow at this rate the gap should close.

Top 20 social networks in the world in 2012 (infographic)

As Facebook passes the billion users mark, this infographic from Silverpop looks at the top 20 social networks in the world, and charts the growth of the medium of the past decade. Facebook and Twitter are the big hitters with one billion and 500 million users respectivley, They are followed by Google+ and the big networks in China, Weibo and RenRen. The rest of the top 10 is filled by LinkedIn, Badoo, Instagram, Yelp and Tumblr.

Apple faces backlash over new iPhone mapping technology

Apple’s new mapping technology, which replaces Google Maps, has come under fire from users and businesses alike for a myriad of inaccuracies and misplaced landmarks. Amongst a wide range of complaints surfacing on Facebook and Twitter include missing towns (Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull), wrong locations (Uckfield in East Sussex) and satellite images of various locations, particularly in Scotland, being obscured by cloud. Some smaller roads and lanes do not even have road names and numbers in the UK. There is also no built-in information about public transportation.

Yelp aims to raise $100m in IPO

US-based local review site Yelp has become the latest Internet company to announce its plans for an initial public offering (IPO), hoping to raise as much as $100 million by selling its shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Yelp claims about 66 million unique visitors per month and has about 25 million total reviews of local businesses such as restaurants, dentists and salons.
