YouTube gains ground on Facebook in UK

YouTube attracted 606m visitors in the UK in December, one in four visits to social networks and gaining ground on market leader facebook in the process, according to new research. The study, from Experian Hitwise, indicate that YouTube was the fastest-growing website in the social category. However, Facebook remains the largest social website by some distance, generating more than 1bn visits per month and a market share of over 50%.

Google sites accounted for 9 in 10 UK searches in December

Google sites, including YouTube, accounted for over 91% of all searches in UK in December 2011, according to new research. The study, from Hitwise, also found that the firms video-sharing site YouTube accounted for a quarter of visits to social networking sites during the same month.

The consumption of recorded television and Internet-delivered programming is quickly surpassing live TV viewership, according to new research from TiVo. Nearly two-thirds of the viewing on web-connected TiVo units is now delayed television or on-demand video via broadband (OTT).

Nielsen has reviewed the top online video destinations visited during 2011, with YouTube getting more than three times more visits than its nearest rival Vevo. During 2011, 111.2 million U.S. people, on average, watched video content on YouTube from home and work computers.

Games consoles becoming ‘entertainment hubs’

US consumers are using their Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii devices to stream movies and TV shows in growing numbers, according to a new survey. The poll of 3000 people in the US, conducted by Nielsen, found that streaming video accounted for 14% of the average time spent using Microsoft 's Xbox 360 in October, up from 10% a year earlier. For Sony's PS3, the share of streaming video was 15% this year, up from 9% last year. The shift was even more dramatic for Nintendo's Wii, which jumped to 33% from 20%.

Viewers of YouTube logged more than 1 trillion playbacks on the online video site in 2011, according to new figures from owner Google. The news comes as the video sharing site unvieled the most popular videos of the year. The staggering figure amounts to 140 views for every person on the planet, Google said.

Global adspend by medium: Internet to grow 16% by 2014

The internet will be the biggest contributor of new ad dollars to the global market, accounting for 52.9% of the growth in total expenditure until 2014, according to new research. The data, from ZenithOptimedia, found paid search will take the largest share of online adspend during that period, contributing 25.6%, followed by display at 22.6%, with classified at a much lower 4.7%.

MySpace has fallen out the UK's top ten most visited social networking sites for the first time ever, according to new research. The data, from Experian Hitwise, indicates that discovery engine Stumble Upon leapfrogged MySpace to claim tenth place based on web traffic data from November, pushing MySpace down to eleventh.

Google launches YouTube analytics tool

Google has replaced YouTube Insight with YouTube Analytics, giving online video producers a more detailed statistics on how their content is watched. The new analytical tool includes a summary report to give top-level performance metrics on the user’s YouTube content. It also gives easy access to more detailed statistics. YouTube Analytics generates the same data given from YouTube Insight and more. It gives the demographics of who is watching the producer’s video content and tells the user where the traffic is being drawn from.

Film soundtrack ‘Kolaveri Di’ goes viral: Tops 8m views in just 2 weeks

The song 'Kolaveri Di' from Indian actor Dhanush's upcoming movie 3 has become one of the internet viral sensations of the year. The Tanglish song (a mix of Tamil and English) with nonsensical lyrics came out just two weeks ago, and has already notched up over 8 million views on YouTube since its launch. By comparison, last year’s hugely successful ‘Old Spice’ YouTube ads got over 35 million views over an extended campaign.

YouTube pays family £100,000 for ‘Charlie bit my finger’ video

Video sharing website YouTube has paid a British family £100,000 for homemade video clips of their three children through the Google payment scheme, Adsense. YouTube often splits with users the revenue from advertising running alongside videos. Kevin Allocca, the manager of YouTube trends, told The Sunday Times: "A tiny percentage of the videos that are uploaded to the site get up to the four or five million views. What they all have in common is the speed with which they are shared."

YouTube launches 100 original web TV channels

YouTube is adding some 100 channels of original programming to its video sharing site, including TV, film, music, sport and celebrity content. The new content includes deals with celebrity partners such as pop music star Madonna and actor Ashton Kutcher. Google, owners of YouTube, reportedly laid out more than $100 million to establish the partnerships, which come as the California technology titan tries to become a preferred source of content for Internet-linked televisions.

YouTube, VEVO, MTV owners Viacom and iTunes are the most popular entertainment web properties in Europe, according to new research. The study, from comScore, indicates that in August 2011, 345.8 million European unique visitors went to Entertainment properties, an increase of 10 percent from the previous year. On average, users spent 174.5 minutes (2.9 hours) on these sites, representing a 10-percent increase in average engagement.

One out of five consumers in the US turn to Facebook to research a product before making a purchase decision, according to new research. The study, from Beyond and M Booth, polled 1,500 US consumers. The findings indicated that those that do research on Facebook tended to avoid using search engines to find product coverage on review sites.

Google ‘paying $100m for YouTube content’- report

Google is taking aim at the cable industry by putting up $100 million to develop original content for dozens of new YouTube channels, according to a news report. According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube hopes to roll out the new channels next year. The paper cited unidentified people ‘familiar with the matter’ saying that the Web giant is near deals or has already reached agreements with skateboarder Tony Hawk and media companies Warner Bros. and News Corp.'s ShineReveille, the company that produces "The Office" and "Ugly Betty."

YouTube to offer film rentals in the UK

YouTube has started a movie rental service in the UK, providing about 1,000 films for the rental service. Video site YouTube Blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and classics including The Birds can be watched via the site. In total, about 1,000 movies have been made available. New releases will cost £3.49 to rent and library titles £2.49. Users have 30 days to begin watching a film, and 48 hours to finish it once they start. The UK is the third territory to get the movie rental service after the US and Canada.

YouTube still dominates the US online video market, followed by VEVO and Facebook, according to new research. The study, from Comscore, ranked the top 10 video sites in terms of unique viewers. Google Sites, driven primarily by video viewing at, ranked as the top online video content property in August with 162 million unique viewers, while VEVO ranked second with 62.3 million.
