Driving the digital transformation agenda – at the BBC and beyond

Stories from transformation journeys, with Danny Meadows-Klue, Founder & CEO, Digital Strategy Consulting

Danny has been driving digital transformation since before it had a name.

In the early 90s, he created digital brands on databases and CD ROMs for the United News & Media group, where he trained as a publishing strategist. In 95, the UK’s first online newspaper, www.Telegraph.co.uk hired him as their brand manager where he pioneered digital publishing and became an industry leader, recognised by the government as one of the UK internet industry’s “100 founders”. He pioneered digital advertising, co-founding the digital industry’s trade association – www.IABuk.net – where he spent 10 years as CEO or Chairman, helping 20 other countries adopt the model to accelerate the transformation of their industries. He has pioneered the digital transformation agenda in education, helping author university and post-graduate courses in digital media and marketing before founding the Digital Training Academy. For the marketing and media industry, he wrote dozens of the first public access training programmes for groups across Europe including ISBA to the IDM, DMA and the IABs, teaching agencies and brands how to use digital channels and media owners how to package and sell in a digital world. In government, he’s served as a policy advisor to ministers of all three main parties, helping create policies to stimulate the creative industries, drive economic growth and regulate digital in a way that protects consumers while enabling commerce. He developed the idea for the ICO’s office, and became the inaugural Commissioner for Digital & Direct marketing to ensure people’s data and rights were respected.

As founder & CEO of www.DigitalStrategyConsulting.com he focusses on driving digital transformation within large organisations, leading the global digital transformation programmes for blue chip names such as Unilever, Diageo and Coca-Cola, coaching thousands of marketers and business leaders on using the latest digital and marketing tools and channels.

Here at the BBC, he was a catalyst in launching our commercial operations. Danny developed the BBC’s Digital Media Sales Academy for all our teams in the UK, Singapore and other markets, helped develop the first-rate cards and sales policies, and guided us along the right track at a time of massive change. To transform digital literacy more broadly, he worked on the launch of News 24, co-producing and presenting our first regular TV packages as “Cyber Update”, a mini-programme within Europe Direct delivered live from cybercafes around London – a show that would become today’s Click.
