15-16 September 2007
Our web analytics and data tracking tools are remotely managed by a team developing a new model for website service delivery. It's an experimental project and we're a development partner for a pioneering young technology firm. But pioneering isn't without risk.
Rather than all of the content, tagging and activity taking place inside the site itself (and within the page structures and CMS), it's delivered on the fly through a proxy server. The process is genuine technical R&D, experimental, and like much that is pioneering, it isn't without risk.
Today we spent much time diagnosing why part of one of our sites disappeared.
What went wrong for us was a failure in one of the redirects. The calls to our server get routed in part through these proxies. The web forwarding in one of their proxies fell over on the 15th and the A record redirect for the DNS fell with it. Our internal team observed the fault on the weekend and tried three separate diagnosis before finding the solution. The outcome of all of this is that we'll be putting a new service level agreement in place with the proxy firm, and some monitoring to check if web forwarding ever falls over again.
Thanks again to the fast footwork of the management and IT teams here at Digital, but on behalf of all of our team, my apologies if you were unable to reach some of our project workspaces on one of our websites for a few hours of the working day. We do help young companies by offering a live environment for testing, and if you do notice anything odd with our sites then ping an email to TheTeam@DigitalStrategyConsulting.com and we'll look at it straight away. You'll also go into the draw for the next champion award for bright ideas.
Many thanks
