Facebook has bought fitness tracking app Moves, suggesting the company’s interest in entering the health monitoring technology arena.

Facebook has acquired the maker of fitness tracking app Moves, which can track the distance the user walks or runs alongside the amount of calories burned.
Facebook said Moves, which would continue to operate as a separate app, fit into its recent strategy of offering a variety of standalone mobile apps, such as Instagram for photo-sharing, Facebook Messenger for messaging and WhatsApp.
ProtoGeo Oy, the Helsinki-based company that created the app, has fewer than 10 employees, and is expected to have cost Facebook much less than its recent high-profile acquisitions, including WhatsApp.
Fitness tracking is attracting the attention of large and small technology companies, with companies such as Fitbit and Jawbone’s acitivity monitoring devices proving popular.
During the year, Amazon launched Amazon Student in the UK, a new programme allowing students six months of free One-Day Delivery on over 7million items. It also revealed it would begin Sunday Deliveries. Meanwhile, Amazon Publishing division revealed its intentions to publish 500 titles in the UK this year.
