The Instagram feature, often criticised for being similar to its rival’s original “Snapchat Stories” format, now attracts 200 million daily active users (DAUs), according to Facebook.
That figure puts it ahead of Snapchat, which reported just 161 million daily active users at the initial public stock offering of parent company Snap Inc. in March.
Instagram Stories, which launched in August, has grown rapidly and is up from 150 million DAUs in January.
The Instagram Stories feature lets users group video, text and pictures together around an event of an interest. It has also recently incorporated location-based geostickers, which Snapchat helped popularise.
Instagram boasts 600 million users, which means that one-third of them are using Stories in some capacity.
Snapchat turned down a $3bn buyout deal from Facebook, which owns Instagram, in 2013.
Since then, Facebook has rolled out its own version of video-sharing developments on its platforms, including Messenger and WhatsApp.
