The update to the Google Play app, which comes ahead of the new academic year in September, allows the lending of textbooks, which often prove prohibitively expensive for students.
The new app lets students save up to 80% off print prices. It also lets them sync throughout devices and on the web.
In addition, the updated app lets students type notes directly onto the digital textbooks.
Students will be able to see which books are available to rent by visiting the Google Play store.
Rival Apple already offers textbooks through its iBooks app and is said to be building in school and university-friendly functionality into iOS 7.
